Hello,

I have been given a plant by a friend as a present for my Tank, this was 3 days ago yesterday I was watching the fish and there have appeared on the sides of the glass, these little white patches. On closer inspection, there are loads of little white specs swimming around. They look just like very young brine shrimp. Obviousley they are not brine shrimp as this is a tropical tank.

Any Ideas, are they harmful. If necessary how do I get rid of them.

Thanks

Leon

Hi Leon. The creatures you have encountered are likely a microscopic organism related to Hydra, but not as large. Under a microscope these guys look like tiny anemones.
They use their teeny tiny tentacles to absorb excess nutrients from the water column. They would not be able to survive in your tank unless water conditions are exceptional. They are harmless, and some fish such as Mollies, Flying Foxes/ False flying foxes, and Siamese Algae Eaters, as well as Gouramis, may eat them if they are hungry. They are nothing to worry about, if they are noticeable on your front glass, just wash them away.
