I have a tank with some tiger barbs, sae's, a bristlenose, and one striata loach (I know I need to get a few more). I am taking everything completely out, and I will be moving the substrate around and everything. This is gonna kick up a lot of stuff, and I am afraid that the entire process will cause my fish unneeded stress and to possibly catch something.

My plan is to put them all in a spare 10g with the water from the tank, gravel from the tank, and the filters from the tank. I am also going to put a spare filter on my main tank. I plan on leaving all the fish in the 10g between one and three days (most likely 1-2) before returning them to the main tank.

What do you think?

I normally get all of the stress done with the same day. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do whatever you need to do to the tank. If you are really worried about kicking up that much stuff do a deep gravel vac/water change. As long as you can pretty closely match the temps of the water, I would be more worried stressing my fish twice in such a short period of time. another way to redo a tank like that is to siphon out 60% of the water into buckets (with the tank heater(s), do everything you need to do and then siphon out what is in the tank as waste water. Refill the tank with the 60% you took which didn't have particulate matter kicked up in it, hook your heater(s) back up, reintroduce fish.

How big is the origional tank? I can not see any concerns other than you could have a mini Cycle. To compensate that I would add the measured amount of Sera Bio Starter to get the good bacteria going. A little stress coat would not go astray when adding them to the new tank as well on their return. Prepare the new water one week ahead to prevent any nasties entering the tank like Ich as it must have a host to live off. When returning the fish back also return the old unwashed subbase this will also have the bacteria in it to help it along.

It is a 29g planted tank. I will be removing all plants, rocks, and driftwood. I will then be moving the gravel around, all the way to the glass in some instances, as I am making different levels.
