Hey would anyone be able to suggest a small schooling fish that would populate the middle to surface regions of my tank. I'm after a fish with different colours than my Rummynose Tetras.

Its 18 gallons and heavily planted. Has a Bolivian Ram and 6 Rummynose Tetras. I'm planning on upping the Rummynose school to 10 or 12 and getting 10 or so Red Cherry Shrimp. The tank has adequate filtration (Eheim 2211 canister), a pH of 6.6 and 3ยบ KH. The tank is also open topped with no cover, though the water is 5cm (2" from the top of the tank. So a fish that isn't going to jump out of the tank would be best. Not sure if there are any middle to surface dwellers that wouldn't jump, but maybe fish that are less likely to jump (e.g. not Hatchets ).

I was thinking a small school of 10 Cardinal Tetras but I'm not sure if they'd venture higher than my Rummy's who just like to stick to just above my carpet plants at the front of the tank. Or what about Lemon Tetras or Cochu's Blue Tetra?

I would have to agree with the Lemon Tetras. From my experience with Cardinals, they tended to swim more towards the bottom, a few inches up from the gravel. I love my Harlequin Rasboras that swim about mid-level in my tank for the most part, but their coloring is kind of similar to the Rummy Noses.

I'm really leaning towards getting either Neon Rainbows or Cochu's Blue Tetras. Anyone had any experience with either of these fish?

hey buddy havn't talked to you in a minute . If your looking for something that will stay towards the top with alot of color male guppies is what I would recommend. They will go all over the tank as well, but they tend to hang out mostly at the top of the water. Can't really think of anything else that comes in as many colors either .
