I was thinking a 6x2x2 (170 gallons)
I would also stock with oscars, pacu, pleco, and jack dempsey

I'm not that familiar with arowana's, but I would think that a tank that is only 2' wide would limit the ability of the fish to comfortably turn around. The length is probably okay.

i dont think it will work, arowana jump, and spook easly, so, you would loose a great tank, and all your fish at the same time i think it has to be like huge, like 300 gallons huge

While 170g may seem big-and it is-for the fish you listed it's not.

The arowana can grow up to 4' and the pacu not much smaller. Doesn't leave a lot of room for them to swim.

Comparatively those fish make the oscar and JD seem tiny. And I have no idea what the mix of temperaments would be like.

what about a 6x3x2 and I drop the pacu?
Would a black aro work? I know they're smaller than silvers

I have heard that a 225g tank is the minimum for a silver arrowana. Other varieties (specify to us if you wanted a different variety) have different requirements. I am pretty sure there is a type of arrowana that would fit in that tank (maybe the asian?), but whether you have that kind of money or the ability to get one is a different story.
I would say a tank that size is too small for pacu. Those things get enormous!!! The sheer body size of a pacu (which can be 4 foot diameter or larger) couple with its very roundness, would probably be too big for that size tank. Red Bellys may be a better choice for you - but then you would have to be careful which fish you would mix them with, though I suspect an arrowana would be ok.
With a 170g tank I would stock it with Tinfoil barbs and Bala Sharks, an Oscar, and a Chinese Hi FIn Banded Shark, but thats just me!

i second that, the length and depth are fine, i'd get something a bit wider. my arowana is growing fast, it's about 2' long now, it is getting uncomfortable for it to turnaround in the tank, (of course, i have a much smaller tank). but the size of the tank would limit the growth of the fish.

ps, what type of arowana are you looking at?

black, silver, or jardini.
Not the australian ones that pete was talking about, too $$$.

BTW, I decided to add another foot to the tank, making it a 6'x3'x2', or 270 gallon tank.

arowana 36"
oscar 12"
elec. blue)jack dempsey 9"
rhino pleco 10"
red-belly pacu 15"?
firemouth 6"
Red Tail Black Shark 6"
green terror 8"
convicts 8"
blood parrots
fire eel 24"
clown knife 24" (36" in wild)
ACF 8"

Are red bellies small than normal pacus? One site said they only reach 15 inches. Are there other fish you would add? Which combination of the above fish would be best? I would only have one of each, except maybe the convicts.

I saw that website, very helpful. Except, I would like to say that most people I've talked to never saw an arowana get any bigger than 2', let alone 4'.

If I can recall correctly the arowanas that do not grow much beyond 2 feet are the Asian arowanas. The others do. Isn't the Australian Arowana a Jardini?

Looking at your list of fish, I am assuming that you are going to have a good filtration system since the fishes you intend to have are great waste producers.

red-belly pacu 15"?

Actually most Pacu reach in excess of 30", and the red belly or blackfin Pacu reaches 47.5" according to this website and several others.
I was actually meaning Red Belly Piranha - not Blackfin Pacu.
Also, the Silver Arrowana I was speaking of is a South American fish, these guys reach 4 feet or so in length, longer in the wild. I believe Jardini's are a smaller variety

Well, if no one you know has heard of a three foot arowana, it is safe to say none of them have seen a full grown specimen before.

Here’s a revised size list:
arowana 45"
oscar 16"
jack dempsey 10"
rhino pleco 18"
red-belly pacu 40"
firemouth 7"
Red Tail Black Shark 7"
green terror 10"
convicts 9"
blood parrots 8”
fire eel 36"
clown knife 20”
ACF 6"

Needless to say, not all of these fish can be housed in the said tank. Don’t try it, unless you want unhappy fish.

The 'Austrlian Arowana' is not a Jardini, and actually a Saratogo. You are looking around $200 for one of these babes.

Jardini and saratoga actually refer to two very similar species of australian arowanas.
