I can understand if Aqua Zoo has been a source, especially since you're so close. I often still go there for feeders and occasionally they get fish I have never seen before so I can look at them in person before I order them through our store. But, I HATE all the people that work there. They've always given me attitude and made smart remarks towards me, they don't really know much about the fish and give false information, and most of them really don't even care about fish...

if kept on a scare diet they r active but if overfed they jsut bury them selves n sleep
i wood say a 20 long wood b the least
feed a few feeder fish at once n see how long it takes for the given fish to b eaten, judge feeding off of that
the more active it is feed it a lil more
but let it go at least a week with out food every once n awhile
they do have nice teeth n if u bother them they do bite n can crush bic pens

Uh Brybenn that sounds as though you are speaking from experience

Is there anyone other than Jamie and I in here who thinks this is a crazy, insane fish to go out and get? I can just see Sheila putting her fingers in the tank like we do all the other tanks, and losing her whole armguess she won't be picking up that soccer ball again, will she?:%)

Make sure Cody keeps his fingers, hands, and arms out of the tank, you don't want him to lose one...better yet put a lock on that lid

I've seen this fish a few times and I find it to be very interesting too. All of the fish I've ever had are oddballs and take a little bit more care and maintenance, but it is worth it to me. I would say get him if you can house him in the proper tank. I've also seen him housed in LFS with other fish, but at a decent size compared to him and definitely much more agile than him. In my personal opinion, he's just a fish that will dig, hang out, and eat. Too many people on here are making it sound like he's a killer and will attack you for no reason. Toss some feeders in for him or some various frozen meats (not too sure about his exact dietary habits) and keep your hands and anything else you don't want to be eaten away from his mouth and I think he will be a great addition to your collection.

*Note - I've seen them for under $20 here in Jacksonville, FL and that was at a size of about 5"s or so. I just don't think he's that popular because either he's not very active, not very attractive to the everyday person with an aquarium, or too little is known about how to properly care for the species.

1tankisneverenough....Shannen and myself are also in Jacksonville. We have seen them too, hence his sudden interest in this fish. Which LFS have you seen them at?

Aqua Zoo in Mandarin, Fish Mania in Mandarin (closed up shop), and Fish Bowl Aquariums (where I work part-time )...

It's cool to find some more people from my city on here! What do you guys have as far as tanks?

Welcome to FP ..Thanks for the info.

The one I'm looking at now is at aqua-zoo.

Here is a link to our list of what we keep right now.

Part of the reason I want this guy is so we have something to do with fry that we need to cull. Jamie won't let me keep an Oscar.]

No need to worry about my digits Heidi. Thanks for the concern tho. You might be surprised to learn that I don't fondle my fish near as much as I should.[/sarcasm]

And Cody knows better.

Edit: Fish Mania, moved further down San Jose. They are now near the Julington Creek Bridge. Unless they closed in the last couple of months and I missed it. Or am I mistaking them for another LFS?

Sounds like we live in the same area. We are in Mandarin. Where are you?

Wow, looks like you got alot of fish! And yes, Fish Mania closed up shop in Mandarin completely, and that includes the one by the bridge. They only have the one on Beach Blvd. open now. I live just 5 minutes south of the Julington Creek bridge. So not far from Mandarin at all. And our store, Fish Bowl Aquariums, is just down the road from there on CR-210.

I never thought to look further down San Jose. We really need to look in a phone book. lol Jamie is new to the area, and I've been away for about 5 yrs.

I know where 210, we might have to come down and have a look around. It's always nice to look.

The zoo, because it's less than 5 mins from us has pretty much been our source. Other than *cough* petsmart.

Thanks again.

I don't know what a stone fish looks like Daka, but a 20 gal I would asume to be the min tank size.

They are not very active from what I gather, so a large tank isn't really needed.

How often should it be fed. Marc said something like 1 or 2 times a month.

I don't like puting my hands in my tanks anyhow. I normally only do it when I can't get something with my long gripper/tong thing.

If he is barried and I need to mess around with something on the floor of the tank. I will simply use a piece of hard tubing to locate the critter before I go digging around with my bare hands.

Thanks for the tips.

I got his tank set up lastnight. A 29 gallon with about 4 inches of black sand.

I'm wondering if a full grown BN would do ok in a tank with him?

I don't really plan on keeping any other fish in this tank, but I would like something to eat algea an I'm pretty positive that Otos are not a good choice. We have 9 BNs and I will need to house an adult somewhere when thay all become full grown.

if u were to keep a bn in with him id suggest if theres any decor in the tank place a large piece of slate under it
these fish r attack/ambush hunters theyll stay burried n wait for it to swim over head then spring out n bite it
they r fully capable of killing plecos the slate allows a barrier to which the distance from where it can bury itsself to the decor the bn mite b on to become larger thus less chance of it attacking the pleco

I don't think that we will be putting a BN in with it as we are having it as brackish. I think that with the size of this thing's mouth it could probably even have taken down the largest of my bn's which was almost six inches long. No worries!

Is this some huge batrachoid toadfish such as the Prehistoric Moster Fish, Thalassophryne amazonica???

Only some of those can amputate fingers with ease if they bite ...
