Shannen, is there actually a species of fish called a monster fish? Or does it go by another name? Hard for anyone to give advice if they don't know the species. Or am I just being a total idiot and not recognizing a common name?

I'm not sure about the scientific name Calil, but yeah that's the one, as says the common name.

Take off fingers????

Pug, That is what they are called, some members will know what I'm talking about. I gather that they are pretty rare. Hence my wanting to get him.

I love having fish that not many people have seen let alone kept.

I'd like to add this one to my list.

BTW, This LFS rocks! They also have some of those hump head glass fish that shini mentioned in one of his "rare fish of the week" threads...

Not to mention the heckle discus.

I could go on and on for days about what else they have!

That was my question, Pug. I've never heard a common name of "Monster Fish." Any pictures?

OK, I'll go up there tomorrow and snap a pic, and see if I can get them to hold him for me. At least until
I know if I can have him.

No worries about Jamie Heidi. We want a fish for cull clean up and this guy would do very well at that, and he isn't an Oscar....

Ok there was a thread some time ago about these guys. I can't find it to revive it. So I'm making a new one.

The one I had mentioned that my LFS has is still there, they only want 30 bucks for him. He is a good 6-7 inches long.

I want him for my larger SA cichlid tank, but only if he will fit I.E. doesn't get too big, and doesn't try to eat an 8 inch severum.

He looks peaceful enough, they have him with other SA cichlids that I'm not familiar with.

He doesn't even seem to notice them. He just kinda sits there looking all neat and stuff.

I'm gonna get him next time I get paid, if he is still there.

Unless you guys can give me info that says not to get him

OK he needs to be kept in a tank with sand for a substrate, and stays relatively small. Looks like I get to have a non planted 20 gal! he digs and the tank I wanted to put him in will be well planted. *shakes fist at the aquascaping contest*

I might add a leaf fish for something to look at in the upper water column.

Thoughts???

Jamie I've got a queen size bed, i'll take one side you the other, just watch out for the cat, dog, and tanks beside the bed

Although this is a smaller Batrachoid fish, and thus likely to live in smaller quarters than some of its relatives (some of which put on a fair amount of body mass), it stil has powerful, mucsular jaws and a well-developed set of teeth. Exercise caution when maintaining its aquarium, and don't put your fingers near its mouth. If you ever see it yawning, you'll soon realise why!
