I'm gonna commute 40-45 minutes for a couple of months then move closer, I hate commuting. My real question is how in the bleep am I gonna move a 55G. I also have a 20long but I think that wont be a problem. The 55 however is concerning me. Should I get some containers for fish transfer & also how do I avoid destroying my chemistry. It is partially planted, do I have to take any precautions to avoid killing my plants? Suggestions would be appreciated. I know its soon but I just wanna be prepared & know what preperations & precautions to take. I'm thinking about saving empty water containers so I could @ least transfer some of the water, but dang that would be alot of water. First, containers. You said it. Perhaps some of the larger Rubber Maid containers that the lids snap tight on. Treat each tank and its contents separately. By that I mean keep the stuff from the 55 separate from the 20 stuff (gravel, plants, filter sponge, etc.) Realize that no matter what you do, you will be cycling two tanks when you relocate. You cannot escape that fact. All you can do is make the cycling go a little faster and easier. Take one day for tearing down and moving the tanks and their contents, nothing else. Since the new location is "close" you can shortcut stuff this way: To do that, I'd scrape off the top half inch of each tanks's substrate and put it in a container with some water. Put the remainder in yet another container. Put the plants all in another container and the fish in another. Take a container of water and put the sponge from the filter in it too. Completely drain and wipe the tanks, load everything and head for the new location. Once there, I'd wash the gravel (that I did not scrape off) and place it in the tank. Then I'd take the container of the old gravel (the top 1/2 inch) and spread it out across the new. Add some water and plant the plants, then top off the tank and start the filters up using the old sponge. Let everything mix for a while and then add the fish. This, of course presumes that the water where you are going has roughly the same values as the old water (pH, etc.) Moving an hour or so away is "easy" compaired to moving across the country. Have fun, and do it a step at a time. Frank ![]() -->>> The Confidence of Amateurs, is the Envy of Professionals <<<-- |

People who take 30 mins or under to get to work is considered a fast commute. Even 1hr or 1hr 20 mins is standard.Make sure you have a radio that works or something good listen to in your car or on a walkman/ipod if you are going by pt. ~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~ |
