I need more information on the tank.

What does it smell like? Feet, rotten eggs, fish?

What is in the tank? Substrate, fish plants, hardscape, size?

What is your maintenance schedule? Water changes, filter cleaning, type of filter?

I have found that when I have a smell problem and I add fresh charcoal to my filtration system, this kills the odd stench within a week if not sooner. Also check to make sure you don't have any dead or rotting fish/plants/etc in the tank. I did notice once that I thought it was the tank smelling and it was the carpet around the tank, where I had accidently sloshed and didn't clean it up well enough...use a carpet cleaner with a mixture of bleachy water to clean up the carpet and tile around the tank. But, be sure NOT to get the bleach in your tank!!!
