One was caught in a river near Lismore in NSW and the other was purchased from an aquarium store. I was given them by the original owner when they decided to change their tanks around.

They kinda are like puppys, just as demanding and cute with their antics.

I never thought an eel would look cute but those do!

maybe I just need to look at more pictures of kitty cats.

Nice tank, looks like you've put some thought into the aquascape, shame that cant be seen as well as the eels , any chance on a brighter full tank shot? The aquascaping contest will be coming soon after all .

There's not much point in any aquascaping really, the eels move it whenever and to wherever they choose.

No unfortunately.

Theyre really cute, kind of remind me of young conger eels. Hope they dont get quite that big.lol.

I reckon they might be Short finned eels, take a looky.

http://www.ifc.tas.gov.au/fact_sheets/short_finned%20eel.html

Failing that they may be marbled eels,( marmoratus, a related but introduced species) ) but the head looks wrong to be a long-finned eel ( rheinhardtii).

Apparently they get over a metre long.

Nice lass!

Not the type that lives near me, the ones around here are massive and i'd be too scared to have them in a tank!

they are so cute! What are you feeding them?

Plans for a pond or are they going to larger tankspace? (I'd suggest a BBQ, but they are just too cute to even joke about it!)

Thanks for the link to that site, proved quite intersting. However, I do believe I have two long-finned eels rather than short-finned.

1. They match the colour description "...dark greenish-brown to black with a mottled or spotted appearance on the back and sides with a lighter belly." I think the differences to the photo colour would be due to environment differences.
2. The top fin is longer (goes further towards the head) than the lower fin. "The dorsal fin origin is clearly in front of the anal fin origin."

And after reading the fact sheet, I'd just like to clarify that these guys were caught by the use of a bush pole as per regulations.

So, it seems my two guys are probably a male and a female, because one is significantly thinker than the other although approximately the same length. And they should be around for a lot longer (up to 30 years they live). And lastly I *may* have to upgrade the tank at some stage. "Size: Commonly up to 1 m, but can reach 1.5 m and in excess of 20 kg."

What are you feeding them?

I'm feeding frozen cube food. Beef heart, bloodworm and sometimes brine shrimp. Add when I like to treat them they get feeder livebearers and bait prawns.

Thinking I may have to start buying small, cheap birds:
"Diet: Feeds on a variety of aquatic fauna including insects, crustaceans, molluscs and fish, and has been known to take juvenile waterfowl."

Plans for a pond or are they going to larger tankspace?

Larger tank eventually, the larger Gibbiceps is starting to look like he'll need more room soon anyway.

I'd suggest a BBQ, but they are just too cute to even joke about it!

Ewww! Apart from the fact they are cute, I don't think I could stomach eel anyway.

The only native eels I have seen are huge up to 6ft and can li8ft their heads 1ft+ out of the water. I would think seriously if you were to put them in an outside pond as some species can and do go for a walkabout.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://
