For the time being, I have a small 5g tank....what are my options?

Other than bettas!

you could have an all plant tank, you could do ottos (although bettas are much prettier and easier to take care of), you could do an apple snail, you could try a paradise fish (similar to bettas).

Male Endler's are small, colorful and get along well together.

I vote for a pair of cherry barbs... they are nice peaceful but colorful fish...

Tho the females are rather drab, i do suggest getting one as the male will never show his brightest colors without one to 'entice' him

I have a 5 gallon with three male platys at work. Add some wood and java moss, and it is a nice looking tank.

One male betta would look spectacular or several female bettas. Some of the females can be very colorful. Add some java moss, something as a cave to hide in or lounge upon and it would look really nice.

Hi,
For some ideas on how to aquascape that 5 gallon tank,
take a look at some of these:

The Cherry barbs would look terrific among the green
plants.
