I'm getting back into the fish scene (left it after a drop in grades ^_^; ).

I'm currently cycling my 55 gallon, and I think I'm going to go with Angelfish this time (as I've never kept any). I have white sand left over from previous setups, and I love the stuff, but I need something that's compatible with Angels to stir it up.

I was looking into various eel types. Any suggestions? It's a standard 55 Gal, and I only plan on the pair of Angels and whatever I can find for the bottom.

Fire eels are probely one of the more nicer looking eels in my opinion. If your not planning on breeding the Angles you could put a good few more fish in the tank that swim at all levels. But if you just want the Angels and eels I would go with 2-3 Fire eels.

Cories, loaches, tetras, and rams are all compatible with angels if you wanted to stock all levels.

Yoyo loaches would be a good alternative to eels. And they stay smaller so you could have more.

I'm going for a "big" tank, and thus would not mind only keeping track of three fish ^_~

Oh ok well then I would go with the following:
2-3 Angels
2 Fire eels
4-5 Yo-Yo Loaches.

Fire eels have been hard to find in my area in the past (I had a friend who loved them). But what about spiny eels or zigzag eels?

I'd go with a zig zag eel just b/c i find them nicer looking. Any eels will be alright for the tank, they all pretty much have the same behavior and get to the same size.

Word of caution here ...

While some Mastacembelid Eels will live in a 55, Fire Eels are an exception. Reason? They can grow to be a metre in length. The 55 might be okay for housing some juvenile Fire Eels, but as they grow, they'll need bigger quarters. if you plan on keeping Fire Eels long term, I'd recommend AT LEAST 250 gallons.

I wish you could have seen the whoppers that Liverpool Museum's aquarium section had before the refit. Those beasties were a good thirty inches long. Cute, but BIG.

Pick your species with care.

That is true with the Fire eels but the do take a long while to grow that size, but still a good point I over looked. The zig zag eel is a good choice as I said before.

I wouldn't put more than one Fire eel in a 55. They can be territorial and they can grow up to 40 inches. Tyre track eels are also fairly large, generally not as agressive, but still a bit territorial that I would only keep one of them.
Angels are wonderful fish, IMO. A 55 should be big enough for some really nice, big sword plants which they like to lay eggs on. What else do you plan on keeping with them?

For stirring sand, nothing beats MTS. If you're lucky, they'll only come out at night, and you'll never see them.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

IMO, most eels do best one to a tank. They are territorial and big, as mentioned above. I think that you might have better luck with a stock ist like this:

2x Angelfish
2x Rams or a pair of another fish you enjoy
5x Yo YO Loaches
1x Small Pleco

Inky

Hmm...

What about something like this?

1 Zigzag Eel (or Spiny, if they're in)
2 Angelfish
2 Cherry Barbs or 2 Gouramis
