I need a few tank mates for my golden gourami. I have a twenty gallon. It's a fairly planted tank with one big rock. There is one otto in there also.

I was thinking about a school of Tiger Barbs because they are so active, but I would like to have one or two bigger fish. Maybe a Rainbow fish or a Krib. I like the Paradise fish, but would that species be too aggressive?

Thanks for your help!

I hate to be obvious here, but a few more golden gourami's might be nice, give the loneley dude something to do, and a social life he can be involved in rather than just watching other fish swim around. Never know, might get some little gourami's Nice thing about labyrinth fish is that you can push the water quality a little. Dont overdo it in a 20 gal tho as you might get a few territoriality issues.

I'd add some sparkling gouramis, and more otos.

Thanks for your suggestions! I ended up getting another golden gourami and two paradise gouramies, but they look like the blue variety of my golden ones.

i probably would have gone with the kribs, to cover the middle/bottom... but a pack of gouramis would look nice too.

just watch out fro kribs, one pair can be agressive to the others during breeding.

My peppered cories have been breeding for the past month, so I planned on putting about three of them in my twenty in a few months when they are big enough, that should take care of the bottom area.

Thanks for the thought though!

You can also add more Ottos, as they like to stay in groups.

It's not so much taking care of the bottom area but otos tend to get quite stressed being on their own

As a general rule it's not a good idea to mix labyrinth fish. If you take a look at the profile [link=here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/bluegourami.xml" style="COLOR: #993333[/link] you'll see blue/gold/three-spot/etc gouramis can vary widely in temperament.

Paradise fish are similar to bettas in the fact that males will fight and shouldn't be kept together. Even when breeding they can be rather rough with the female.

You might be able to get by with a small group of sparkling gouramis if there are enough plants/hiding places.

I'd be concerned with tiger barbs being nippy with the gourami, I'm not sure. Rainbow fish generally have to be kept in groups. A krib by itself might be ok; a breeding pair would become very agressive.

It really depends on the individual fish...I have a 20g with a honey gourami, sparkling gouramis, and a betta coccina along with other fish. The honey let everyone know he's the boss but otherwise I haven't had any problems.
