My neighbor is giving me a 10 gallon tank with a stand and heater. I wasn't planning on getting another new tank for awhile, at least until my other one is "done," but hey, it's free, so I might as well use it

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what to do with it. I think I've narrowed it down to either

a. Shell dwellers

b. Dwarf puffers

c. Heavily planted with either neons or cardinals (if I go with this one, how many could I put in there?)

d. Assorted snails

e. Generic community, but with some sort of color theme...I've got a cello betta in a 1.5 gallon bowl that I'd like to move into something larger, and I was thinking that he'd look nice in the 10 gallon with some albino cories or other "flesh colored" fish, and some plants.

Which would you recommend?

I'm split between shellies and cardinals. I'm leaning towards the shellies though, and not just because I recently set up a 10g for multies Cardinals are gorgeous but I think look better in a really big school in a larger tank.

Good luck

If you decide to go with cardinals don't put them into a new tank, especially if it's cycling. Many fish, but especially cardinals will probably not survive. I would wait at least 5 to 6 months before putting cardinals in.

I've the same problem, an empty 10, so I know what you're going thru . Many of the fish you've listed will do fairly well in the 10, but be forewarned. Some of them are NOT hardy little fish and will not survive the cycling process. I tried the DPs, but the little buggers wouldn't eat anything and starved to death. I even put a healthy supply of small snails in there for them. Unfortunately, many DPs are still caught in the wild and just don't fare well in tanks, at least not without live foods. They are agreat little fish, tho, and I wish they would've worked out for me. They also will not survive the cycling process.
Cardinals... you could fit about 10 of them in there but they also, are not that hardy and will NOT survive the cycling process. :#( . Pretty little fish, but they do need an established tank.
Not too sure about shellies altho a lot of ppl seem to like and recommend them. I cannot have them because of...well never mind it's a wife thing.
I have decided that I will have to adapt or change the filter but I'm putting in a nice blue Betta, along with perhaps an oto or a few albino cories. Good luck with your new tank
