That size of a tank really isn't made for much more than a betta, or possibly a few WCMM's. If it is only a 3 gallon then I would say only a betta.

Welcome to Fishprofiles

By the looks of it, your not a newbe, so you know all about the cycle (if not, that's cool, there's an article on it on this site).

Guppies are fine for a 5 gallon. I'd go all male because they are more colorful than the ladies and you don't want fry (unless you have other tanks that might want some live food).

I'd start by buying the substrate (sand or gravel) and setting up the filter and equipment. Then, let it cycle. It shouldn't take that long cause it's a small tank. I'd add the plants during the cycle to speed it up.

That's basically it, since your not going to put that many guppies in (3 - 7 in a 5 gallon tank is enough) you can add them in trios.

Edit:
Grr, OldTimer, you beat me too it!
Although a betta is "best" for a 5 gallon, you can have guppies, SOME African Chichlids, African Dwarf Frogs (ADFs), dwarf puffers, enders, or bumblebee gobies as well.

Kitten has an excelllent thread on this (which I contributed to ). I think it's called "small tank stocking" You should seach around

best of luck

a small 5 gallon....go with a wonderful looking male betta, plant it and decorate it, he will love you for it Or you could go with 2 beautiful lady bettas, they too would love you for it...

I know dj mentioned guppies, but I'd shy away from them, because truly you are only asking for trouble...eventually you'll end up with a female and then the trouble begins, especially with a small tank...

Here take a look at what Diane has done with her small betta tanks...in my opinion it is love at first site

It just struck me that you are the same person who made the tankmates thread. I say it makes more sense to put the guppies in their own tank now rather than have them with the angelfish. If you do happen to have a female, you can always feed the fry to the angel. It's healthier than alot of store food.

Heidi, what trouble is he asking for?

I believe the trouble Heidi was reffering to is that guppies are what i like to call "underwater rabbits" meaning that with one female your guppy population can multiply many times very quickly!:%)

In that case, I don't think the guppys will be any trouble if you have any other tanks. Cheap food
