Well, it's been a few months since I lost all but one of my Angel fish due to a power outage, and I'm very anxious to repopulate my 65 gallon tank, especially now that the green water is gradually going away, hopefully for good!
So now I have a number of options, and I'm not 100% certain what I should go with.

I have one juvenile Angel left, and he is active and eating voraciously, despite an injury to his dorsal fin that I have no idea how he could have gotten. Anyway, I'm hoping to set up a new 35 gal. tank in the next few months, so I could move that fish there if I don't get more angels. Or, I could get more angel fish and try that again, but I'd have to get ones that are approximately the same size as the one I still have and just hope that they get along.

I have an opportunity to buy 10 male rainbows of various types. The color would be amazing, and I've heard they are fairly easy to keep, however, I don't know a whole lot about rainbow fish. Will different types of rainbows get along together, or will there be fighting?

Something else that has been suggested to me is Gouramis. A few color morphs of the blue gourami would be lovely, but I already have gouramis in another tank, so I'd like to do something different. I could also get 10 or so Congo tetras. I think these fish are beautiful and would fill out the tank nicely, but I also have a very active school of SAEs, so I'm not certain I want to get another schooling fish.

What are your thoughts?

"What are your thoughts?" - a) to choose the fish you've already decided on in the back of your mind before posting this

b) We can create lots of pages advising what we think, in which case you will revert back to a).

ps - sorry to hear about your lost angels...

Firstly, are you going to keep the angel that survived? As this could have some impact on whether you add some of those other fish.

Right, so really, it's between additional angels and the rainbows... Are rainbows hardier or easier to keep than angels? This is where I really am stuck.

As for the remaining angel, I do plan to keep him. Since he's just a juvenile (I've had him since he was dime-sized, and his body is now nearly 2 inches), I don't anticipate he'll be a problem if I do decide to add rainbows (unless they'll pick on him???). If I go with the rainbows, I will eventually move the remaining angel to another tank, probably a 35 gal. where he'll be the centerpiece fish.

Rainbows will not pick on him. My concern is that they will be so active, and cause him to just sit somewhere. Being less active himself.

Right now, the angel is in with 8 crazy SAEs (some of which may be moving) and he's been competing for food with vigor, so as long as he won't get picked on, I don't worry about him being too stressed out with all the activity. The rainbows will probably be added only 2-3 at a time over a month or two, so everyone will have a chance to get used to everyone else before more are added.

If you're going with Gourami's, i suggest getting some Pearl Gourami, as they are peaceful & their colours are superb.

I already have a trio of Pearl Gouramis in another tank, though it's true, they are lovely, and even though the male is a bully, no one in the tank takes him too seriously. Since I already have gouramis, I'd really like to try a different fish. Rainbows would be very colorful and something completely new to me, which is appealing. And I originally wanted angels because I think they are some of the most stunning fish when they're fully grown, but I've got to manage to keep them alive and healthy...

Angels and rainbows get on fine , the temps arent truly compatible in some cases, but generally theyre fine. I have 2 adult angels in with about 30 or so adult rainbows at the mo, huge tank, but they basically ignore each other.

Rainbow species get on well with each other generally, providing you have both sexes of each, males without females of their own kind tend to hassle females of other species remorselessly in their desperation.

Believe me, I'd really love to do both! However, the main occupant of this tank is a 10+ inch common pleco that I just don't have the heart to get rid of (had him for 6 years now). He's a pretty major impact on the bio load, so there's only room left for 4 or so full gown angels, or maybe 6-8 rainbows. I'm starting to lean towards getting the rainbows, and if they aren't going to be a compatibility problem, I'll probably just keep the remaining angel in there with them for a few months until I can set up a new tank for him.

In other good news, my green water is finally almost gone, so I hope to post pictures of this tank soon, since a number of people have asked about it.
