I'm not a cichlid person in the least, so I really can't comment on angels. However, I'll raise a hand for the gourami suggestions. I think a gourami would look lovely in that tank, especially when it gets a bit bigger.

See, it's not that I want JUST one centerpiece fish. I'd like to add angelfish to my tank. If they're OK as solitary fish, then that answers one of my questions. But if not - and I'm starting to get the feeling they're better off in groups of three or more, or at least in pairs - then I'd like to hear peoples' opinions on if - in their opinions and in their experiences - it would be OK to add 3 angels to my current set-up, or if I'm better off going in a different direction because three angels would be too much for what I can provide them. That's all I'm really getting at...

One thing i forgot to tell you, since they are a schooling fish, they can be quite interesting to watch if you put them in small schools, I really don't think you would get the fun out of them if you only had one, and liek i said he woudl be quite bored by himself and might nip at some of your other fish

Angels are lots of fun to watch but you really shoudl never put just one angel in a tank at a time they are a schooling fish. They really need to be in groups of 3 or more, they get bored by themselves and tend to pick on other fish, similar to what tiger barbs do. Your tank is quite awesoem but if you only want one fish, I really don't think an angel would be the best bet for you. There are lots of other suitable fish for what you are looking for i am sure. You now have me intrigued so i would be glad ot research it for you some and get back to you

Thanks spaz

But I'm still kind of leaning towards an angel or angels. I've never been crazy about gourami. And I feel like I have the rest of my tank already set with the big school of harleys and the yo-yos and BN on the bottom. I wouldn't want to crowd the bottm of my tank with rams - plus I already have my fav. species of dwarf cichlid (lamp. brevis ) As long as they're compatible with what I have, I guess my question is how many, 1, 2 or 3? I still feel like, with the size they can reach, three might be pushing it.

first of all, let me say that that is a great looking tank.

i think that an angel (or 2 or 3) would look good in that tank. although, i'm not sure how much room they'd have, because of that large cluster of plants. you might want to consider something a little more nimble. like mentioned before, gouramis would look great. you could also fit in a cichlid, or cichlids, that wouldn't terrorize your rasboras. you could probably even get away with getting both cichlids and gouramis. 46 gallons can hold a lot. the cichlid would cover the bottom and the gourami would take the top.

if you only wanted one main centerpiece, you could go for a gourami and maybe a pair of rams for the bottom.

the possibilities are endless.

i think that gouramis of some type would look GREAT. Pearl gouramis come to mind. In fact I set up a tank at a store that I worked at that is VERY similar to yours. It has Harlies, yoyos, an albino rainbow shark, and some pearl gouramis. Looks GREAT.

Thanks for the replys. Water temp right now is about 78-79 degrees. It's a comprimise between the loaches (like it warmer) and harleys (like it a bit cooler). I think I could easily bump it up to 79-80 without a problem. I think my filtration is alright, especially considering I have it on the lowest flow setting because of the betta. If I push that a little further I think it would work - and there's always the possibility of adding another smaller filter.

But would 2 angels be alright behavior wise? Generally speaking with cichlids, unless there's a pair, I was under the impression that one would bully the other, or two males would fight. Is that not so with them?

The tank looks suitable for Angels, nice light level, good planting, and its easily tall enough, with one minor thing that might need altering- you might need better filtration.
Angels eat quite a bit of food and poo quite a bit, and they are picky about water quality. I dont think your rasboras would make any impact on a half grown angel, but they might possible badger a baby.

One thing I would ask is what is the water temperature? Angels like it hot, and dont do well when when compromised for heat. It could probably be made to work out though. I might go for 2 angels to start with, check the water quality readings and then see if its worth upgrading the filtration before you go for that last angel.

Not a personal choice of mine but a dwarf gourami would hold his own and they have great colour types.
