Can you tell us more? Like what kind of substrate you will be using, any driftwood or rocks, or plants. Also what do you like, tetras, barbs, cichlids, gouramis? What do you not like?
That would help us alot because there are many options for 55g.
When it comes to the theme, I like a natural theme: natural color gravel, driftwood, rocks, and plants.

I agree more info is required. Tank size, and your experience, and how much you want to spend. I suggest you have a good look at many aquscapes you can.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

Platys would look nice too... Rainbow Platys, Mickey Mouse Platy. . . Add fish with lots of color though, makes them stand out more among lots of rocks and plants.

Edit: Glo lite tetra's are a great schooling fish... they really stand out in the plants too. -OR maybe that is just because mine are uncommonly big. *Overeaters anon. for my fishies* :%)

Just an idea.

I like a mix half green half white. Look good in a similar tank I have. Mine is a South American Cichlids tank with LOTS of plants, few rocks, a 10" long 1½" diameter stainless steel bolt, some large black PVC pipe fittings as hide-outs. The theme is "city dump".

I prefer live plants, because IMO they look better and more natural, especially if you are putting natural things like rocks or driftwood in the tank. They do require some maintenance, and depending on what kind of lighting you have, you may need to upgrade to get a better choice of live plants. If you are not willing to spend time on live plants, then I would go with plastic.
As for bottom feeders, I have heard different things about cories and barbs. If the barbs have a nice school, like your 20, then they should be focused more on themselves enough not to stress out cories. On the other hand, yoyo loaches are another choice. You could have 6-8 of them and they are active enough not to be stressed by the barbs. They are also bigger and wouldn't feel intimidated. Give them plenty of hiding places and they will be very happy.
I don't remember how much gravel I actually put in my 55g. With live plants you need atleast 2-3 inches. Preferably 3 inches. If you decide to go with plastic, then you wouldn't need as much. I know there is a site with a calculator, but not sure what it is. Maybe someone else does. If I find it I will post it.
What kind of pleco do you have? A BN would be great for algae. If you have a common pleco it will get too large for your tank. If you got a BN you could also have a few ottos as well. Good luck.:%)
