I got a 125g over the weekend, gotta love my husband, anyway I need advice for filters. Which would be best? Also heaters, do I get two? Or is there one big enough for the tank? It came with two strips for lighting, if I want plants do I need more light? I have my 29 and 10, so can I use them to cycle the big one? Then, of course, I would like some suggestions for fish. Thanks, all!

cant help you with the hardware needed, i havent delt with anything that big before. but if i had something that big which one day i will, i would say a small shark, or a manta ray or two, or go fresh water and have koi (i know people who do this)

Try canister filters and two heaters. That way is one stops working, the other will keep the water temp from dropping drastically.

Manta rays? Koi? Unless there's a small species of manta that I don't know about, you really don't have room in there for either of these fish.

Two heaters is a good idea, and you probably will need more light than those standard bulb/fixture deals if you want live plants. There are some low-light plants that would be able to stand the situation, but they wouldn't grow very quickly.

Personally, since I like these fish so much, I'd go with a South American setup. Cories, tetras, a pleco or two, a harem of Apistogramma cichids, other dwarf cichlids pencilfish, hatchetfish, and Otocinclus catfish are all good candidates, and there are plenty more. Check out your lfs for other ideas on which fish you like.

why not koi? average large size of the ones i have seen full size is between 14-18 inches. i have seen a tank or three that had 3 8in koi in it and had no problem. some sharks get bigger than that and people say that a 125 is good for them.

Err koi, when full grown, are 4 feet long. Id say at least 300 gal a koi. Theyre huge pooping machines and deserve a nice pond, IMHO.

Manta rays?

"Individual manta rays can grow up to 23 feet (8 meters) across and weigh over 1 400 kilos, which qualifies the manta ray as one of the five largest species of fish in the world."**

Maybe you're thinking of another species of ray...

As for suggestions, i say go to your LFS and write down names you like. With 125 gallons, you can do a whole lot.

I have no plans to put anything saltwater in this tank. But besides koi, is there anything that I can't put in there? With regards to space I mean. I know there are other issues. The one fish that I know is going in, is my angel Chandler. I think he/she needs a friend! So maybe more of them? Also, I love my cories, so I want some in this tank.

Monkeyboy,

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/koi.xml

Koi get way over 2 feet, your koi may not have gotten passed 18 inches due to the fact that 12 koi in 1000 gallons of water is overstocked IMHO.
--------------------------------------------------------

You can add more angels if you want. You can have a large school of cories and tetras. There are few species of gouramis that get 6-8 inches and are very pretty.

tank that big. you can put almost anything in there. just like katieb said, go check out the lfs and look. it all depends on the size of fish you want. obviously smaller fish you can get alot more of. i myself just setup a 55g with 6 angels just because i know how big they get. but i am adding bottom dwellers soon.

its not my setup. and as far as the over stocking rules. as long as you filter right and water changes, i dont beleive in them. because i had about 80 guppies in a 20g tall and they were fine with no problems at all.

Adequate filtration and water changes only solve one part of the problems that come when you have a fish that gets way too big for its set up. They wont give your koi anymore room then they already have.

Think of it like putting a great dane in a closet. It doesnt matter if you scoop out all the waste and give it food and water daily. It still needs room to walk around and grow.
