I think you should
either

a) do a log thread cos I like reading them and nicking ideas and drooling over pictures.

or

b) send the tank to me!(please)

I am guessing you will go with a). Where did matt put his thread? I remember reading it, I can't find it now.

It would be helpful for newbies in the Get it Started" forum, but you would get a lot of traffic in General Freshwater???

hmmm. But since it is about the development of your tank maybe Aquascaping.... it fits the topic requirement best.

just hurry up!

Gang,

Thank you so much for your input. I realize that I made a mistake when phrasing my questions above because I left way too much room for answers. Well, I got what I deserve .

All my questions are geared towards your ideas of creating a log thread, where, when, and additional info about it.

Nevertheless, I will make some statements towards your comments/questions.

I have been planning this tank for over 2 1/2 months now, so I put already quite a few thoughts and decisions in the process. A lot of it is based on my personal preferences and input that I got from sooooo many nice members (like you) here at FP.

[link=This Link]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Planted%20Aquaria/62580.html" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link] to an older post of mine basically explains the technical details as well as the desired fishies. Warning, you will have to do a little reading if you want to get the whole picture (some details have changed though).

This should conclude most of longhairedgit’s suggestions (thank you so much for the elaborate information).

LittleMousling – The tank is currently parked on a counter top in the basement as the stand has to be leveled first.
longhairedgit – I am actually not going to cycle the tank as it will be heavily planted from the getgo. Bacteria development will happen slowly parallel to the natural aging of the tank with fish and plants. Even in my [link=29G]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Aquascaping/61406.html" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link], the first time I had Nitrates in that tank was when I added them for plant growth (no CO2). I will start the tank with my 10 (or 12 if I buy 2 Gold Twin Bars) platies.

Again, thanks all, keep the log thread ideas coming,

Ingo

Should be most interesting watching the progression of your tank. You could come to some conclusions about what you would like to see in the tank- (obviously budget being the limits).

Its rather nice in a tank that size to consider making an aquarium that is a smaller scale version of a biotope in nature from a particular region. Say for example you could go for an amazon aquarium for pretty much maximum available variety, or an east asian tank filled with diverse species, or something themed on a lake or stream , like malawi cichlid based tank, or even a new guinea or new zealand based tanks (rainbows hint hint lol.)

Plants from americas , africas and asia are certainly available and you could try to be as authentic as possible, thusly enhancing your knowledge or experience of a certain biotope, If you maintain authenticity you will have less problems with compatibility , water conditions ,and disease issues too.

You could go for just a few large predatory fish too, although i think long term interest is better maintained with communities for long term enjoyment , especially as putting in smaller less agressive fish means you could try a range of freshwater invertabrates too, and employ algae eating fish etc without fear of them being consumed. Also smaller fish will mean you have more choice of substrates and can dedicate more detail into making the substrate suitable for the plants.

Plants will appreciate stable water conditions, and since water changes are less necessary with smaller fish and lower stocking levels you may wish to consider using small fish a factor.

Perhaps a nice thing to do would be to get together a few volumes of the baensch aquarium atlas and make shortlists of suitable species of fish and plants that would be compatible , and then shorten it still further by what is actually available in your area. You could think in terms of stratifying the fish to go in the tank, with surface dwellers midwater fish etc, usually the bottom could be reserved for scavengers like cories , shrimp and so on.This would help reduce the competition for space in the tank. You could even plan areas that may be used as open water courtship arenas , open gravel and or java mosses or similar for spawning- or putting shells in for certain species etc. Its nice to plan a tank that has a little something for every individuality and in that size you can just about do it.

Since even if you put a nice chunky filter in it right away like an eheim 2229 or similar youd have nearly a month until the tank was cycled, so you'd have plenty of time to choose and shop around for some decent fish and plants, dont be afraid to leave a reserve on any special fish you like.

You could also layer various substrates and fertilisers , and plan the rock or wood decoration with all the nooks and crannies for the fish and eliminate eddys in the tank before you put the plants in. You could also plan your fixtures and fittings to be out of the way as much as possible and choose a backdrop suitable for your fish, some people even paint or photograph their own for that touch of individuality.Good time to do minor jobs like cutting holes in drip trays etc ready for the equipment.

You could also balance the lighting against the plants you are planning to keep, in a tank that size a few floating species might be nice too.

What's the tank sitting on for that photo? What kind of stand are you using?

Start the post now under aquascaping. Start by posting that pic and asking people for their ideas or opinions. It helps to have a whole bunch of ideas before you begin.
What types of fish are going in there?

I personally like seeing threads about tanks coming together. I would start it when you have more of the equipment and are finally ready to start putting things together. That way we won't have to wait too long for updates.

I envy you a tank that large.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
