I think there's something wrong with my Red Sea Nitrate Test.

I've been getting a zero reading on nitrate even after adding PKNO3 (Greenlight Stump Remover) to the tank in 1/4 tsp doses every few days.

Does any know basically (I know it varies) how fast the PKNO3 is used up.

I did put 1/4 tsp of the stuff in an 8 oz cup and tested water from the cup and I still got a zero reading (green color), when I dumbed more in about 1 tsp it did pink up.

Do the chemicals in these test kits go bad after a certain amount of time?

I had similar results with a nitrate test of a different brand whose name escapes me. It was one where you add 10 drops from two different bottles. I couldn't understand why I didn't get any nitrate readings since I was cycling my tank and had watched the ammonia and then the nitrites rise and drop to 0.

Eventually, I re-read the instructions which said that you had to shake bottle #2 for 30 seconds prior to adding it. Apparently, that was important because it did the trick.

Just thought I'd mention it in the off chance that yours is the same.

Yes you do have to shake. Now that you mentioned that I'm going to try again and pay attention to how much I shake, etc. Thanks!
