They are limpets, a type of gastropod.

They are not snails, but related to them. Yes, they are inverts (mollusks).

Very similar to snails. They are scavengers and do not harm plants.

I really like them and any info would help, for I'd like in the future to get one of these cute lil' things!

If mine breed, I might be able to send some to you.

I would be extermely intrested in having one if yours breeds, get back to me on that when you can.

Do they have any fish that are bad tankmates? If so could someone tell me.

Maybe in a PM, this is not in the right place.

Basically the only fish you don't want to keep them with are snail-eaters such as loaches, or very aggressive cichlids. Because they cannot retreat into their shells like snails can, if they are flipped over they are very vulnerable to attack.

Their main defense is that they can suck very, very hard onto whatever surface they are on, and they can be very difficult to remove from the glass. But if a loach or some other fish manages to pry them off from where they are, they are pretty much doomed.

Also, when you put them into your tank, you have to make sure their shells are facing down. This is because if they are on their backs, they are unable to flip themselves over.

In my one tank I have a weather loach, a red tailed shark and a red tailed botia. Will any of these be mean to him I have other fish in this tank as well but they would not be bothersome, there not snail eaters.

I'm not sure about the three I have though ^ do they eat snails?

Thanks Angel Eel

Er, aren't several Botia loaches snail eaters? Not just Clown Loaches?

If I recall correctly, Botia sidthimunki, Botia striata, Botia horae are just three other snail eating Botias. There may be more. I think those limpets would be doomed in an aquarium with any Botia loach.

Oh, and those limpets are amazing ... wonderful shell pattern!

Actually, they are snails, belonging to the family Neritidae.

They're Neritid Snails?

Hmm.

Toritis mentioned that several Neritids will eat cyanobacteria. Is this one of them?

They are found worldwide. In fact, I live very close to the San Francisco Bay, and I could go out on any dock around here and collect at least 200 limpets. They are abundant in nearly all marine habitats.

But it's that these are freshwater limpets that makes them so unusual. I had never even heard of them until I actually saw them in the store.
