Hey guys, I was looking over the Ocean Nutrition Brand Flake foods and noticed that it seems to have really good main ingredients for carnivores (a lot of animal derived ingredients).

However, I had read that a fat percentage over 8% for carnivores is bad, that it can be harmful for their liver, all the Ocean Nutrition Flake foods are 11% and up!

Can anyone comment on this further?

Thanks!

Depends on the nature of the fat, does it state which fat it is , or in which compounds? Not all fats are bad.It might just be binding agent that the fish flush through, but if it is animal fat it might be a bit high.Fish can process some fats and not others. A piscivorous fish would have more trouble processing fat from beef than it would from say , eating another fish.

As you can see it's animal derived. Though they are all aquatic animals.

Ash isn't bad, its just not useful. Its a testing process, the product itself doesn't actually have ashes in it

Fish fats are less of a problem than land animal fats. Fish are designed to process fish fats, but even lower levels of animal fats can cause problems.

I am unsure of the specific requirements for fish when it comes to fish fats, but to me, 11% looks like its within acceptable.
Is that a minimum or a maximum amount? Most of my foods say minimum 8% guaranteed fat (my conditioning food says min 19

thinking about it, large table fish are valued for high omega 3 levels, which is oil-based. I'd say that fish probably have a reasonably high fat requirements anyway in order to come to that.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

I have read studies showing that more often fish derived ingredients are more digestiable then that of say beef or chicken etc. But it also depends on the species of fish eating it.

Yes that is the minimum amount of fat.
If you look most other processed foods are well below that, normally around the 3%, 5% and 8% range.
I'd like to feed this if I can because this is by far the flake food with the most fish ingredients in it that I have ever come across yet.

I guess the only thing I can do is try it, and measure it's capability by growth and overall healthiness of my fish.
