Hi, have some granite / slatey type rocks that i used to have in my first aqarium that contain 2 mexican walking fish. When they passed on several years ago i put the rocks in the garden. I would like to put them in my new tank. Do i need to prepare them in anyway. Apart from a good rinse.

If you didn't use any thing bad in your garden, then a good rinse would be fine.

Call me paranoid but I usually sterilize my garden rocks to get rid of any parasites or anything that might be lurking on them. To sterilize them I either *cook* them in a pot of boiling water for about 15-20 minutes, or if they don't fit in a pot I put them in the oven set at 300-400 degrees for about 15-30 minutes. I scrub them before and after I cook them because sometimes it (boiling at least) will loosen stuff on them that I couldn't get off before. All of the rocks in my tanks are garden and beach finds, I don't buy anything like that from the LFS. :88)

I've always scrubed and boiled for 20 min or so before they go in the tank. I havent lived in my house long enough to know for sure that 10 years ago something unplesant was done to the rock I've decided to use.
Large bucket of water in the microwave or 20 minutes on the stove....the benifit of the microwave is it helps loosen up any of those bits of exploded whoknowswhat stuck on the door .
