OK so going to set up my 4 footer now.

I have 3 kissing gouramis that are going to be the centrepiece. Then some guppies - male ones. A couple bristlenose catfish.

Well maybe other types of livebearers, danios,a few of silver dollars, gouramis ( other types ), or barbs. The only problem with danios and barbs is that they would most like give the guppies a hard time.

Silver Dollars get big and need a lot of swimming room. A 4 foot tank would be too small for them.

I'd say add some small schooling fish like cardinal tetras or even diamond tetras and maybe a bigger centerpiece fish. A severum (gold or green, depends on which you prefer) would be nice in a tank like that. But, if you want the kissing gourami's, then I would say no severum, since they get kinda big. Also, a nice pleco maybe a gold nugget (L-18) would be good in there. Or even a pair of BN plecos.

You can add some big bodied Tetra's or maybe a couple of Corydoras.

Giant danios would work well in that sized tank.

I think only fancy goldfish can be kept in a 4 foot tank...unless it is a taller tank than a 55...by the way how many gallons IS your tank?...I don't think I caught that anywhere in the post.

No the boss wanted goldfish but I didn't.

So I have convinced her to not have these. Just some Kissing gouramis and some guppies.

Im not a big fan of keeping fancy goldfish with other tropicals primarily because a lot of them are very disease tolerant- but carry many bacteria and virusus that wild caught fish and species from other locales may have no resistance to.

Second if you have a planted tank goldfish can be total swines for digging plants up, and finally many of those who have bred characteristics like outsized eyes, ornamental growths and excessive tails are often limited in their mobility.

This makes them vulnerable to both being outcompeted for food by fitter more natural species , and absolute victims should territorial fighting or fin nipping occur.

In addition many goldfish have comparatively slow metabolisms and a lower calorie requirement than some tropicals and they put on weight abnormally fast due to selective breeding mutations,so the richer diet normally fed to tropicals can lead to obesity very fast( thats assuming they arent outcompeted at feeding times to begin with.).

It's a 55 gallon tank, and Kissing Gouramis get much too big for it. You should stick with the smaller Trichogaster gouramis in that size of tank.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
