my LFS carries painted fish and I've talked about it to them
the shop is VERY small and I guess they sell what they can. They have painted parrot cichlids and some kind of tetra or another on occasion. I mentioned about how horrible a practice it was and she said she knew and dropped it. I don't buy much stock there but do try to support them whenever I can because it is a "local" business and businesses around here is tough. If only I could get them to educate their customers and they wouldnt have sell the poor fish.

my lfs carried died tetras for a while and i said their colour would fade away.
For once they listened to me and decided not to sell them anymore!
Now I get discounts there so win win situation.
they cost an extra 45 cents to order than the wild type ones./:'

It's a really pity to buy painted/dyed fish. Don't buy them & spread the word to others.

The owner tries to avoid them but sometimes they end up sneaking their way into his bulk shipments and by that time there's not a lot he can do. He does inform all customers that the fish are dyed and that the colour isn't natural and that they will probably be less hearty, etc. He says he would rather sell them to an informed customer than destroy them, and I do agree with that.

he does stock the occasional hybrid though, I once saw a tank of dyed jellybean cichlids in there and gave them a piece of my mind. After I threatened to have the local aquarium clubs boycott the store, they agreed to stop selling them. Newbies do buy them but the loss of business from a lot of local breeders would have been much worse.

Well, there are a couple stores in my area, and as far as I know, none of them carry the painteds. The only one that does I don't go to. I never got the nerve to talk to them about it. My fiance got a pair of them last year not knowing they were actually painted. Funny thing about them, they're doing very well and even spawned once.

HOWEVER, we will never buy more.

The old LFS I went to had dyed/ painted fish. I don't go there anymore, for a number of reasons.

Now I go to a different LFS, it's a longer drive but it's a much better LFS

They said that they brought them in because they had people asking for them. They were just seeing how they go before deciding if they would stock as standard option.

I think when people ask about them the staff should say. "We don't stock them and this is why _______"

Once I told a lady at work that the cool fish she had seen had undergone the tattooing process she went right off them. I think a majority of people would steer clear if they knew.

Just my 2c worth.

To keep the poll from heading in the direction of 90% "Other" (my most-frequent LFS doesn't stock them, either), I'm voting for a store in the area that isn't a chain and does have them. I've mentioned it, but I admit I haven't boycotted because they're the only local place with occasional shellies. That said, as I'm all stocked up now, I won't be going back there.

One I used to patronize when I first restarted fish keeping did. Found a couple of others that don't. So I will patronize those.

Since this has come up a few times lately I figured I'd do a poll on it.

Exactly the same here as Mike. They know they're going to cop an ear bashing from me about it too
But thankfully they have only got them in once since I've been going there

I have gone to 1 lfs in baytown that carries painted fish, and the few times i've been their i yell at them, and complain, and tell anyone who will listen how the fish become these odd colors.

2 of the other lfses i visit do not carry them, and i am thankful of that.

The other one I used to do business with carries them also, but I have whined and complained to them plenty of times, but because of how rude they have become I've quit going there...
