We are going to paint the room which my aquarium is in. Moving the aquarium is a lot of work, but there is enough room behind the aquairum to get a roller in there. My question is can I leave the fish in the tank while the room is being painted? I would cover the aquarium up with a sheet so no paint can get in or on it. Would the paint affect the fish in anyway? Another option would to move the fish into a rubbermaid bin for the time being.

Cover the tank well if it's way too much trouble, leave it covered till all the smell is gone. Make sure the room is well ventalated, but also that the temp doesnt drop too much for the fish. I'd also be sure to have some carbon on hand and run it a few hours later for a day or so. Or use fresh carbon if you normally run carbon.

Rubbermaid tanks are great as well, but you also have to be concerned with what settles into the water from the air.

Well the tank is near a window which will be opened while painting. There is also another window in the room, so fresh air will be getitng in. I will cover the tank with sheets so no paint accidently drops into the tank through an opening and I'll be sure to run carbon when everything is done.

In addition to what babel mentioned, also be sure to turn off any air pumps that are used by the tank, as to not draw air/fumes directly into the tank.

Make sure the air isn't cold that's coming in pouring at the tank either

Yeah, depending on how cold it is you'll want to cover with a blanket just to help the heater keep up with any cold air and to prevent too many cold spots. I'd see if you could put off the painting if possible till a warmer day.

I know that's not always possible.

make sure your cover any external canister filters etc. aswell during the paint job, im sure you would anyway but its best to keep that all covered.

We have painted, hung plaster.. all kinds of dusty horrible things in the room (laarge room, many windows) with our fish tank covered during the process and have had no sickness or death. When turning of the air pumps I brought my filter spray bars quite high above the surface of the water to increase the water agitation which seemed to help as alot of our surface movement etc came from the air pumps bubbles..

pain in the arse having fish some times ay!

Well lucky for me I don't have any air pumps and I just bought a Fluval 204 canister filter, which is going to be underneath in the stand anyways.

To help in removing the paint fumes (caused by the paint drying) use extra ventalation by placing a good fan and a heater in the room. My last inside paint job (whole house ) I have three air pumps and never a problem two large fans plus a heater as well.

I only covered up tank while in that area.
