I was wondering if I could put 3 young piranha in a 55 gallon with my walking catfish? I have lots of plants, caves and adding wood aswell, if so what would be good dithers for them?

As stated in the PROFILES section of this web site, piranha will/might tolerate a tank mate in a large aquarium. Otherwise, all tank mates are welcome. Please tell them to bring a bottle of wine... Dinner TIME !!!

Piranhas in general do best in 6+ schools in 100 gallon + tanks. The tankmates they go best with would be the tough-as-nails catfish like shovelnoses or plecos. They literally have armor-bodies so they won't get that hurt if the piranha's try to take a nip.

At a public aquarium, I saw a school of Piranha being kept with some Doradids and Plecos, and the cats looked perectly healthy and happy.

agrees with dj, pirhanas dont really belong in small tanks,

and on an off topic, dont walking cat fish get big, and in some states are illegal, but i think that should be by itself.

with RBP the math is
pirhanas + schools + big fish = big tank.

If a piranha wanted to, it could easily make short work of any loricariid, doradid, or otherwise that would be unlucky enough to find itself in such an environment. However, if well fed, most of the less aggressive species tend to keep to themselves, with the occassional tankmate casualty, but nothing serious.

All that was said makes sense, and I dont want to lose my pride and joy ( walking catfish ). I guess I'll have to figure something else out to go with him. Are there any african schooling fish that could go in with him?
