I never realized how much plants affect the behavior of fish, especially schooling fish. My tank was mostly driftwood with a few plants and the fish would move nicely from end to end. I recently added more plants to the sides and back and now my big school of cardinals sort of hover instead the stem areas of the plans.

I like the way the tank looks, but I enjoyed the fish moving across the tank.

That does seem to be true.
My white skirt tetras schooled for a day or so after I added a CO2 diffuser .

Maybe my neons are just crazy like I am:%)but my 125 is heavily planted, and my Neons are still schooling, and my Emperors are still schooling, along with the fact that the Danties are trying to school with both of the above:%) Then again it could just be me...give them time...Heidi

Hope your right, because I really enjoy the movement back and forth. They seem to hang out between the stems of my hygrophila sunset. I left alot of room so light could get through. Maybe if the stems were closer together they wouldn't do that.

At work we have a display tank with a huge amazon sword in it, and there's a school of about 20 cardinal tetras living inside of it. Since the leaves on Amazon swords are pretty far apart, the cardinals can all still be seen easily.

It is natural behavior, as they feel safer in there than out in the open, and I think it looks really cool actually.

I'm happy their happy, but visually nothing beats a large school of cardinals going across the tank.

mine used to do that as well
all my tetra tanks have been planted
try a varied diet of live foods, that always brings out fish n keeps them active
but cardinals will always remain close to the plants
sorry bout ur luck
