Hi my counciler at school gave me 2 platy fry and at the moment I'm feeding them a mix of crushed TetraMin tropical crisps and freeze dried blood worms. There in a critter keeper that holds close to 1g with no pump or filter. I was wondering what kind of tank do they need? Are they ok for now in what I have them in. I've only had them sence monday(24th) and I did a 50% water change today after I got home from school. My counciler says they were born on eather the 18th or 19th so there barly a week old. Any help would be nice thanks.

They will need a bigger tank and definatly need a filter. They will prob also need a heater depending on the temperature of the room you are keeping them in.

The size depends on if you want to keep other fish with them. I would recomend a 10 gallon or higher if you are intrested in getting more fish but a 5 gallon would probably work for just the pair. Also temperature needs to be stable not between 75F-80F make sure to get a thermometer to check that and add a heater if needed.

I dont know how expierenced you are with fish or livebearers but the FAQ's are a good source of information on many topics.

Hi there.

bcwcat22 is Right you really need to buy a tank
I'dd go to a Big surface Shop and Keep an Eye for any promotions with Aquarium kits. sometimes you can get lucky
Otherwise get a 10/20 g tank or bigger cause when you get your first fish you can never stop with only 2.

They really also need a heater and a filter but you should focus on a bigger aquarium first. then you should get a filter and a heater suited for the aquarium you bought.

Good luck with the fry.

I already have other fish in other tanks for now I just want to put them in somthing to let them grow since there only a week old and there is only 2 of them. I have a friend whos going to give me a 1gal tank that has a light and bubbler (air stone). Will this be ok till they are big anuff to be put in to one of my other tanks? I can also add a wisper in tank filter I have for 1-3gal tanks if I need it.

when they are this small a one gall will be ok, just make sure the water is perfect and in maybe two months they can moved to your main tank or a tank of their own.

water quaility is definitely the key.

GoodLuck

Yeah, grab a tank with a filter and if it's small, make sure to keep it really clean. You'll need some sort of water current in there. Use a sponge filter, or if you're using a HOB or similar, make sure it's not so strong as to suck them up. Cut a piece of filter foam and make a slit in it to slip over the intake of a strong filter to cut down the power if you need to.

There's fry food you can buy, but I just crush up what food I already have to make powdered food for my guppy fry. Here's the thread I made on [link=making fry food]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Breeding%20Advice/64558.html" style="COLOR: #00A0AE[/link].

I've never done much more than just feed them the crushed food. If you want, go out and buy a breeder net (made of fine cloth mesh) and hang it in your main tank and put the fry there. That way, they're protected, but are in a more stable environment. This is the only special treatment I've given to my guppy fry when I really wanted to keep a batch. Otherwise, they fend for themselves.

Here's a [link=net breeder]http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441777359&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030071&bmUID=1130523324466" style="COLOR: #00A0AE[/link] like the one I use. When the fry are large enough to be released (bigger than the biggest mouth in the tank), just unhook the net from the side of the tank and let them free. Just make sure to keep an eye on it when you do water changes... perhaps keep that kritter keeper handy and transfer them to that with water from the tank when you clean the main tank if you decided to go the net breeder route.

Thanks so much today I set up the 1gal tank that has a nice lid with a light. I didn't put any fish gravel and I put the wisper in tank filter in it. This filter is made for 1-3gal. I took some new panty hose washed it real good then cut a pice to go over the intake. It's now set up and running but I didn't put the fry in it there still in the kritter keeper. I'm not sure how long to run it befor I add them does any one know how long I should wait? Thanks again for all your help it means SOOO MUCH to me
