I have a female convict cichlid alone in a planted 30 gallon tank. My LFS said a pleco would be good match for my convict and address the algae.

They know of a 6" long pleco, I don't know which one, that needs a new home. My convict is about 4" long right now.

My LFS said I should have a hiding spot for the pleco during the day to avoid harassment by the pleco.

I'm thinking it would be a mistake, but I'd love some other opinions.

Thanks!
Tim

A bristlenose (ancistrus sp.) could work in that tank. They are pretty tough and can take a beating in general. Just make sure you have a cave for it like your LFS said, they also like some driftwood to munch on.

convicts aren't all that aggressive unless they're breeding, and used to house plecos of all sorts with them at work, and know plenty of people with the combo. As advised by tryst and the store, have a few hiding spots, not just for the plec/vict, but for any fish.

While a plec and convict combo will probably work out, especially if the plec is bigger than the convict- you need to make sure the plec youre getting wont outgrow that 30 gallon. A lot of plecs get well over 12 inches which would be too big, so make sure you check the species before acquiring one. Clown plecs and tiger plecs are good choices. Common plecs are probably too large.

Thanks for all the replies!

I've decided to pass on the pleco. The pleco is just too big for that tank. Turns out it was almost 8" long! Also, the owner didn't know which species of pleco it was so I'd have to try to identify it and hope it's not one of the big ones. He said it's black with some spots and a large flat head.

My cichlid is happy to be by herself so I'll keep life simple.

thanks again,
Tim
