Hello,

How would a large (8 inch) Polypterus Senegalus fair in a 120 gallon tank with adult green and black ruby barbs.

Would he eat the barbs at night or would they be evasive enough to avoid him?

I have kept Bichirs with Barbs before for about six months and I have only had one casuality. He was a tiny checkered barb, and I think that was because he was sick. He may have even died before hand.

If you put these fish with tetra, neons or goldfish then I think you will have a problem, however with barbs, especially green and black rubies, I think you will be OK.

Bichirs tend to stay clear of quick aggressive schools so as long as he is not starved, I would do it.

If your barbs start to go missing, maybe return him to the LFS.

Another surprise was that the bichirs would also stay clear of my many small synodontis nigriventris. One cool fish! I was nervous at first but had no problems. If you need some cats, check these guys out. They are startig to become more popular at LFS'.

One more think, feed the bichir some beef heart and see what happens.

I'm not to familiar with barbs, but if they get as big as tiger barbs you will not have a problem. Just throw in some rosey reds every week or 2, and it will be fine.
