Um, well 99% of people don't have to worry about the hardness of their water, so the LFS is probably just trying to make a few bucks and sell unecessary crap to people.

The blue crystals are rock salt and epsom salts with a few drops of meth blue added to make them blue. I used to make them when I worked at my lfs. They do raise your GH but you dont need them unless you have soft water. Melbourne water is very soft so you might find them useful if you are in Melb.

It brings it up. Anywhere between 4-6 degrees is good.

So what's the value of the GH for Melbourne tap water then Lindy? Only if it's below 2°GH it's probably ideal for breeding Glowlight Tetras, especially if the carbonate hardness is low. Only Glowlight fry are very sensitive to carbonates for the first 7 days or so of life, and need gradual adjusting to increasing levels.

I have a TFH back number which covers this aspect of Glwolight spawning and fry rearing in some detail.

I get zero readings for both KH and GH from my tap water. According to the water company it is .05 of a degree. Its good in that we can adjust the waters hardness fairly easily. Much easier than trying to soften it.

That low? Wow.

I'd like to think that this was a reflection of water purity in your area, but then you'll probably reply with less than delightful information about nitrate eutrophication from agricultural runoff

It would be interesting to find out just how pure your water is. Only from the brief description thus far, it sounds as if you have water that is good enough to breed Discus in without resorting to an RO unit. If so, I think I'll emigrate

No nitrate in our water either.
If I can find the website I'll post it, it provides test results for lots of minerals and compounds in our water. I recently lost all my bookmarks though so I cant promise anything.

If I become a reef keeper, I think I'll emigrate ... your water sounds amazing ... no nitrates, precious little mineral content ... has your local water company stumbled upon the Fountain of Eternal Youth by any chance?

If they have found The Fountain they are keeping it a secret from us Cali!
The only downside to our good water is that there isnt alot of it. Most of Aus in on water restrictions. Melbourne has been put on permanent water restrictions and there are $$ incentives for people to install rain tanks and to use grey water(laundry) on their gardens.
