Depends on the type of rainbows. Some species grow too large to keep in an appropriate group in a 40g tank, such as Boesmani and Irian Reds.

I don't think there will be any problems with Ram's & Rainbow's.
Just make sure that they'll be fine when fully grown.

I think that is a lovely idea,

Get 2 rams, preferably male / female, and a small group of rainbows, the neon dwarf rainbows might suit you very well.

The rainbows that I have now that will be going into the tank are Boesemani Rainbows. Right now they are in my 55 gal. I hope to also get some smaller ones too.

Boesmani rainbows really grow to large for the 40g.You should keep them in the 55.

They only get to be about 4"'s right? I have 3 of them. Two males about full size and a female that is only about an inch and a half. My 40 gal is the same 4' in length just about 4 inches shorter....

IMO thats fine as long as they have a long tank (like yours) where they can do laps and pick up some speed you should be able to keep them in a 40G

If they get to be around 6 inches then someone should up date the profile for them. It says in there that they get 3.5"'s
