This evening I attempted to rearrange my 20 gallon tank for the first time. And I will probably will never rearrange another tank ever again, unless I complettely tear it down.

I wanted to vaccume the gravel a bit and also split and rearrange my plants a little.

WELL...

I forgot to unplug my heater --- which is now fried

I tryed to rearrange my plants and rocks because I read somewhere that it is good to rearrange your tanks once and a while so the fish don't get too boared or territorial.

I tryed to do all of this with my fish in the tank --- not expecting to take near an hour in reorganizing

And when I filled the tank back up, I tried using my home made no spill system (which cost $14 and is 20' long, but does not have the devert flow switch, so you know I made a mess) and ended up putting 90 degree water in a tank that is normalls 78 degrees. Luckly the tank is full of tropical fish.

Now all I am hoping is that when I wake up tomorrow morning, my fish will still be alive after all the stress and water temperature fluxuations!

Man... if this isn't an ultimate dumb *** attack I don;t know what is

signed,
Thats it I quite I'm leaving it the way it is

Sounds like an ordeal...I can relate. Me and the cannister filter are not best buds.

THe heater carked it after being left on during a water change only ONCE? Rip off. That is awful. I have on occassion left it on when the water dips below the rubber top and it has never failed. (famous last words, watch out wish-ga)

btw an hour isn't long in fish-time. You did well to get all that done in an hour. (take pity on we of the bucket lugging brigade)

Sounds like you have learnt a very good lesson on what not to do.
I can tell you you would not be the first or last person to leave the heater on. I have done it more than once also I have forgotten to turn them back on for at least 24 hrs.

Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

highjinx, you have my sympathy! I've lost count of how often one of my 5-minute tidy-ups has turned into a half-day ordeal for me and my fish!

Fortunately I haven't broken a heater (yet) but I've ended up with water everywhere, buckets full of water sitting on every surface with tank ornaments, plants and bits of filter in them... wet towels, wet sleeves... and it's about this point that I totally run out of energy and all I want to do is stuff everything back in the tank and go and have a lie-down

And that routine happens... oh... about once a week

Sounds like my usual Aquascaping attempts, tv table with towel with plant cuttings, ornaments in the sink as well as on the table, rocks everywhere and water in a path wherever I go ....and thats using the Python!

The best thing to do when youre aquascaping is try to take your time, and do your rearranging after taking out only part of the water you want to drain, that way you can strain out the filthy stuff after rearranging. Your fish will be ok for awhile...keep the filter running till it doesnt get enough water- easy if you have a canister.
Relax....and remember rearranging sometimes can take days or weeks, take your time and enjoy it!

GOOD NEWS

day 1... fish are stil alive
some plants may be dying

But its still gonna take some time getting used to the new aquascape. The old one was fine, except my plants were a bit over grown. Im just glad I learned this lesson before I bought some zebra plecos

Over all... alls good thus far
