Horrible moving situation. Wife and I just bought a new home. I gave my 30 day notice Nov 10 at the old house. Said I would be out Dec 10. We were organizing and decided to move the fish last. Our land lady showed up on Nov 30 and told us we had to be out due to some verbage on the lease. Needless to say we had to move everything in 24 hours. We shoved the fishtanks in the back of the garage. I lost 25 of my fish in the cold garage. All we could plug in was the filter. The temp variable killed off everything in my heated 55 gallon. My 30 gallon unheated tank survived. Enough about my mid life crisis. Now we have our new den organized. The 55 gallon still has the original water in it. Should I restart from scratch or try to jump start the water that I have. Do you think there is any beneficial bacteria left or all ammonia? I added water to my 30 and it is doing great along with the fish. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would restart from scratch in your 55. Give the filter a good cleaning and, if possible, hook it up to the 30 to start a bio-load in the filter. Clean the aquarium well including the substrate, then re-landscape and re-fill. If you start your filter about 2 weeks ahead of time on the 30 and use BioSpira or a similar product, you should be able to stock within days after filling the 55. Just go slowly on adding critters.

most of the good stuff in yr filter etc are aerobic - they die when the oxygen does! so if your water sat for a long while, i think you need to empty it out and start again - but ditto above - go slow on building yr stock after a thorough cycling period, and you'll be fine - sorry about yr losses too.

That sux Blaze...Sorry man.

I would not have moved. In the U.S. we have these little things called laws and rights.

You can never be just kicked out on your rear from a dwelling that you have taken up residence in.

Just as you have to give them a 30 day notice, they have to give you one.

I'm betting the landlord had a tenant who wanted the place before you guys were ready.

Oh well too late now..Live and learn.

You guys are right. The move sucked. I have restored my 30 gallon as of tonight. I only lost my Zebra Plec from that tanks. Most of the fish in the 30 I have had since May 1999. They are tough. Another thing I forgot to mention.. I now have well water. Any + or - about that. The PH is a little high but nothing critical. The GH is 0 so is the ammonia. The water has a sulfer scent to it.
I intend to get the 55 on her feet this week. I am going to drain and clean the rock then start a slow cycle with a school of something.

You lost a zebra pleco? Isn't that a 150 dollar or so fish? I'm just wondering because you stated it rather calmly.

A plus on well water is that you won't have to worry about dechlor.
The rule that seems to go around is that an hour without proper oxygenation is enough to kill the biofilter, as well as a temps below, 50 if I remember correctly.

I hope you gave the landlady some grief about that, you had things planed out and they changed resulting in a massive loss of life.

Well being that I also lost 20+ others including a 18+ inch plec that I have had for almost 8 years and a 42.00 Royal Plec. I am kind of numb at this point. I have been into the hobby for almost 25 years. I also bought this Zebra at a pet chain store and he was tagged wrong. I paid 55$ for him. They had him tagged as a Royal Plec. Good for me but it is inline with their general animal knowledge. This was a retail store btw that I will leave as unmentioned.

Heart breaking, really. I{ve never lost a fish with lots of years with me, but have lost some altough not loved, they were appreciated by me.

Its exactly when people say "if the fish dies, you just buy another"...... stupid people that thinks animal life can be disposed.

And sometimes that stupid people its someone on your family....
