What would you put in a 50 gallon tank that has
2 balas
6 corys
3 ottos
5 kuhlis

This is a planted tank with about 20lbs of driftwood
2 millenium 3000 HOB filters temp of 76deg. and lots of mid to high level swimming room. I would like to keep the size of the schoolers around 1 inch.

Opinions please.

I'd recommend a few more cories, and my recommendation for the schoolers would either be Rummynoses or Harlequin Rasboras. Also, Balas get RATHER large, so I wouldn't really recommend them for a tank that size...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I'd go with harlequins. Peaceful, nice coloring, and great schoolers

Penguin Tetras are quite a large tetra (2.5 inches or larger) and in my experience can be somewhat aggressive and territorial with each other and other fish.

Your Balas will get too big for that tank, a fish of 14 inches needs at least a 90G tank.

Some suggestions:
Pencilfish
Silvertip tetras
Lemon Tetras
Glass Bloodfin Tetras
Cochus Blue Tetras
Neons
Cardinal Tetras
Black Neons
Harlequin Rasbora
Threadfin or Celebes Rainbowfish or Dwarf Neon Rainbow
Danios of many types
Rummynose Tetras
Pristella Tetras

I suggest more Corydoras of the same type that you already have & a school of Rummynose Tetra. They are great schoolers.

The best schoolers I've ever seen are the Harqulein Rasboras. Rummynosea are really nice fish and good schoolers, but they tend to look washed out in most setups.

Cardinals are my favorite, but they really don't school that tight, depending on conditions. The rasboras school tight all the time and are pretty hardy. I actually cycled a tank with them when I didn't know any better and they all survived.

The whole "bala sharks get too big" thing has already been pointed out, so instead I'll point out that otos are schooling fish and would prefer a few more to their numbers.

Other than that, I'll agree with most of the suggestions for the schooling fish. I'll also point out that neons or cardinals would certainly bring some color to your tank, and generally seem to school nicely.

The suggestions are a great help. Thanks for the replys. I know the balas will get to big. When I bought them they were only 2 inches long and I did not know how big they got(should have researched). I don't know if 8 corys is to many or not, if not I would love to get 2 more. I would like to get a dozen schoolers. Do ya think it's to much? Does anybody know how to deal with 4 inch balas other than get a new tank? Maybe find someone with a big enough tank?

Hi Lowlight,
Im in the same situation you are, except my Balas (3) are reaching 9 inches, and my tank is a 75g, which was a downgrade to replace my leaking 90.
Unfortunately, no room in my 75 for all the fish I have now, certainly not for the Balas.
What I am doing, is taking them to a particular Local Fish Store that tends to sell a lot of Large Size fish. He has customers with big tanks who want big fish, so he will be buying them off me for $10 each.
Try your local fish stores, ask around which will give you the best deal/trade for them. Sometimes stores are willing to trade you credit for fish, or money, or sometimes credit only on dry goods.
If that doesnt work for you, if you have a Buy Sell and Trade type of Newspaper around you, list in that for sale or will trade for what have you, would be surprising what people may offer.
Good luck!
