I recently lost 90% of my community tank to a bad case of ich and ammonia combined... i'm doing a complete overhaul with just 3 species, i think... i want to have a semi-heavily planted tank, if you could all give some suggestions as to what i can do or post pictures of your tanks, that would be great. thanks.

Hi there,

I would suggest you read through the thousands of posts to get an idea (well maybe only through a few hundred). In addition, peruse the internet for loads of tank pictures, ranging from people like us to real pros.

Your question is phrased so broad that any answer would be the length of entire book. Maybe you should break it up into specifics.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

How big is the tank?

What fish are left? (since only 90% are gone)

What kind of fish do you like? (South American, African, Asian?)

i'm not putting any of those fish back. it's a 29 gallon and i plan on having a school of tiger barbs and a couple cichlids that are no more than 6" (probably firemouths), and one more species, to cover the top.

I don't think a 29 is suitable for 2 firemouths and some more fish...

Why not go for...

8 Tetras
8 Cory's
2 Rams (Bolivian or Blue)
1 Dwarf Gourami

Sorry you lost most of your stock, but real glad you're not giving up . Depending on what size tank you have and what fish are survivors from the old stock will give you a starting point with what to stock with. If any of the survivors are schooling fish start with re-establishing those schools as large as possible, then move on from there. Again, depending on tank size I'd make sure your schools are @least 10-12 each.

How planted the tank can be will be determined in a large part by how much lighting is on the tank. More lighting (over 2wpg) generally require CO2 to take full advantage of the additional light. Even low light tanks can benefit from CO2.
