| Severly Overstocked | |
lover&fighter![]() Banned Posts: 5 Kudos: 5 Votes: 0 Registered: 15-Jun-2005 ![]() | Ok here it goes i am trying to convince my cousin that his tank is SEVERLY overstocked. In his 55 he has 14 tiger barbs, 3 giant danios, 2 blue tetras, 3 swordtails, 3 platies, 1 wcmm, 1 black neon tetra, 2 harlequin rasboras, 5 serpea tetras, 4 albino cories, 1 otto, 1 rtbs ( red tailed black shark ) and 3 fiddler crabs. thats 43 fish & crabs. He says its ok cause he has 3 hob power filters. Thay are nice filters but i don't think anything can make up for all the bio load.So what do you all think? Am i crazy or is He? Please tell me how i should deal with this situation |

Badly stocked, but not overstocked. The blue tetras, wcmm, black neon, and harles all belong in schools of 6 or more, so do the serpaes and otto, and cories. He should return the black neons, harles and wcmm, and up the schools of danios, cories, ottos and serpaes to 6. He should also be careful as his crabs may kill some of his fish. Oh and it is a BEAUTIFUL tank! The tigers, giant danios, and serpeas. Spawn every couple months. A very beautiful tank. |

lover&fighter![]() Banned Posts: 5 Kudos: 5 Votes: 0 Registered: 15-Jun-2005 ![]() | So the group opinion is ok to understocked? Not overstocked? I guess i have always understocked my tanks. So what should he get to "finish" his tank? P.S. Conchos Blue Tetras don't like schools IME. They do better in one per small tank (>55) or 2-3 in a 55. The lone oto would definitely do better with friends too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
lover&fighter![]() Banned Posts: 5 Kudos: 5 Votes: 0 Registered: 15-Jun-2005 ![]() | Yeah it was supposed to be just the giant danios, tigerbarbs, rtbs, blue tetras, and the serpeas. (plus crabs) That would be an "aggressive tank". He had a 29 for the others but while we were moving it we dropped it. So till he gets another one then its gonna have to stay that way. |

It's certainly not right to ask him to give his fish away, especially if it's only a temporary setup. When is he replacing the 29 gallon? Either way, it's his business what he does with his tank. If we had the power to fiz people's tanks as we saw fit, most of us would be down at the nearest pet____ chain store in the blink of an eye. We certainly can't help you convince your friend to give away his fish. But we can give advice on how to make it work. EDIT: And addition to the schooling problems, the crabs are an issue. Although they are peaceful enough to be put in a community tank (that gruesome claw is just for show), they require brackish water, as well as some dry land.
