| Should I move out my ADF? | |
bettan![]() Fingerling Posts: 20 Votes: 5 Registered: 09-Feb-2005 ![]() | I just wonder if you think I should put my ADF in a bowl till I can get her eating? Like it is now, she is in a 5g with my betta. I tried to give her frozen bloodworms yesterday but she is very shy. Before she even get that it is food, my betta has eaten it all ![]() I would like to see if I can keep her, I just lost her friend yesterday... |

They are very slow to find and eat their food. When I had Zebra Danios in with my ADFs, there was only one thing that allowed the ADFs time to eat. I didn't like doing it, but I literally had to chase the danios away from the frog food. I would hold a plastic aquarium tool in the water, just above the frog's food. Then when the danios tried to get the food, I just slightly moved the tool to scare them away. As I said, I didn't enjoy doing this. So I bought another tank and moved the danios out. For your situation, I'd first have to ask and couple questions. Do you feed the Betta at the surface, just before dropping in the ADFs food? Have you tried any other types of food for the ADF? A pellet type food might work out better than the bloodworms. Bettas can't resist bloodworms. ![]() Last edited by T/A at 02-Mar-2005 19:02 |

And the frogs love them! Sinking foods are generally a good idea for frogs, and there's a few different kinds you can look at. I believe there's pellets specifically meant for frogs, as well. Perhaps try those? As was said, bettas can't resist bloodworms! ![]() ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

Yes, they do shed their skin like any other amphibian when they grow- which can be as many as 12 times during a single year! My Suggestion, feed the betta until hes done, then feed your frog. 1 Cube Bloodworms for the betta, 1 cube for the frog. You can also get "Salamander and Newt Bites" which is a soft small pellet, which your betta probably wont touch, but is gourmet for frogs! Try varying the diet too...tubifex would be accepted with relish by frogs, as well as real earthworms from the ground, soaked in a small saucer of milk so they release their dirt, and then chopped into bite size bits (small enough the frog wont choke on it). You do not need to remove your frog to feed it. Just feed him after your betta has eaten. And dont worry, he will probably get enough food anyway. African Dwarf Frogs are social critters and like friends. You could easily fit more in a 5 gallon tank. As for feeding them, if you wash you hands, you can hand feed them. They will take food from you if you wiggle it in front of them. |
bettan![]() Fingerling Posts: 20 Votes: 5 Registered: 09-Feb-2005 ![]() | thanks djtj! that is what I have just done! I bought 1 more ADF yesterday so now I have 2... And I actually handfeed them frozen bloodworms (I can tell you my betta loves me , he think his an ADF too!!!How many ADFs could I have in a 5g with one betta??? I really like those ADFs /:' |

But I gotta say, ADFs are my thing. In a 5 gallon, I'd say you could easily have 5. They make very little waste and the more frogs you have the happier they are. I would suggest that you put in 3 females and 2 males. Males are not territorial, but they are very prolific, so the females get tired out easily. Sexing them is easy. There are 3 ways to go about this. First of all, males are much thinner than the chubby females. This is general, because a well-fed male could easly be mistaken for a female. If you are still unsure, which is only natural, check for a tail. Males do not have tails, while females have little pointy things on their rears. They are very small, and still you may have some confusion. Finally, the surefire way to sex an ADF, is to check the armpits! This sounds really strange, but it always works. Males have what look like pimples under each armpit. No one is sure what they are for, but they most likely are used in mating. If you use all three techniques together, you will be able to tell apart you ADFs. Best of luck - DJ :88) |
