Ok so I have seen these fish at a have everything under the sun kind of store. They were in a tank with many other fish. The only fish that I remember were tiger barbs. I just did some reserch on these guys and every thing that I found said that they are brackish/salt water fish. If this is true how then can these guys be living in fresh water. Kind of mixed up right now on this one. Are they like Salmon, Steelhead, or Stripers that can live in either? Thanks!

Edit!!! I am a Enthusiast now!! How bout dat!!

Im pretty sure that they're Mono.Sebae, or Monos for short. They're a brackish water fish that eventually needs almost full saltwater to thrive. They also need a large tank. At least 75g.

So at a young age then they hang out in fresher water? Then work out into the main salt water? Interesting stuff. Too bad this place sells fish. Ever time I go there their tanks make me so sad. Very over populated and many dead fish. GRR!!

They can tolerate freshwater when young, but they should never be kept in it for any extended amount of time. When they are young, they live in estuaries (brackishwater) but then move to coastal reefs when they reach about 4" long. They are much more tolorant of saltwater than freshwater however, and when my LFS gets a large shipment of juvies (about 2" long), we just put them in full-strength seawater and they do fine.

I have my Monos in my fresh water tank for last two years I have seen no ill affect to them, I do keep a little salt in the tank 1 tbs for every 5 gallons but that is it, Monos go to the salt water in the wild because that is what nature tells them to, in captivity they will even breed in fresh water, they adapt very well to what ever salinity they are kept in

The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an bacon and egg breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."
