Check this site out- it has a free downloadable version of the site with loads of pictures that can help you identify the vast majority of rainbowfish you will encounter, complete with regional information and comprehensive keeping , feeding & care tips, if rainbowfish information is thin on the ground where you are you may find it invaluable.

Ive read it all and its no rubbish. It also has links to some quality information on other subjects. A well above average site

yeah I know americans seem to be able to get them , but they might be from captive bred stocks, australian rules on the import and export of fish and what you are and arent allowed to keep can be a bit weird and contradictory, so I dont know if its legal to keep them there.

Good luck on finding them tho, you might find em a bit delicate, but you never know till you try i suppose.

another travelling forumite!

We have made the trip from Sydney to brizzy before for a fish auction, but I didn't know anyone else was as crazy!

It's a shame that people here are finding it hard to get rainbowfish. I guess part of the reason is because they look fairly ordinary in store tanks. I bought a pair of tiny little washed out looking rainbows two years ago, they are now full coloured beautiful bosemani rainbows. My husband and I have a few different species of rainbows, our favourites are the little blue eyes and the dwarf neons. I would love to find somewhere that has splendid rainbows - the pictures I have seen look so beautiful.

hey snug, just returned from a collecting trip to Qld got heaps of cute natives including some really nice empire gudgeons, I made a contact whilst there with a commercial breeder bought some papuae's n some pierucciae both melanetonia from NG the latter have only been in Aus for about 18 months just starting to be produced in commercial quantities picture an electric sky blue fish with violet highlights n the males get a vivid white line from nose to dorsal fin when they display....yes they are really cute I am sure I could help you out with your request for cute rainbows at a resonable price ie not retail but ya gotta buy in lots of at least 6 of each plus freight direct from the farm take care n chill...make a wish list n post it I will check for you regards Gary

They do sound gorgeous. I'm still trying to decide what to repopulate my tank with actually. At the moment I have 3 boesemani's, 2 splendids of some sort, a bristlenose and 2 clown loaches in my 4'. My husband has a 2' with dwarf neons and pacific blue eyes (and a bristlenose). I had an beautiful empire gudgeon at one stage but I have moved my tank several times in recent years and it succumbed at one point.

I put together a list of the most usually available rainbows then made a sort of wish list. I wouldn't mind the trifasciata (regal rainbow) or some threadfins.

Locally I have seen red rainbows, lake kutubu (lacustris), boesemani, pacific blue eyes, dwarf neons, dwarf (macchullochi), papuan and various splendids for sale. So there is a bit of variety there, just not really ones I want presently.
