Nope, cant get 1.

Cardnials are fish that like to be in groups.

Usually the minimum number you should buy is 6.

Having only 1 in the tank will make it very shy, and have an early death.

I agree with you all. I had 4 cardinal tetras, now down to one who lives in the tank full of endlers.. he keeps to himself.. occasionally swims out, but still does eat. So it is healthy, just alone.. dont have room to add any cardinals at the moment..*work in progress*... hth

72 gallon bowfront:Tanganyikan Lake set up
75 gallon: A. Baenschi trio,Cyanotilapia Afra Cobwe(4), copadichromis trewavase, protomelas sp. tangerine tiger(breeding pair)

I'm not quite sure why you have to prove to your babysitter that 1 cardinal tetra is a bad idea. After all, it's your tank. I really don't think it is necessary for you to make a thread about it. I'm sure a simple "no thanks" will suffice.

Anyway, I'll join your petetion. I had 2 tetras by themselves and I thought it was enough. Apparently it wasn't and they died within a week.

You could always let her get one, then add some more yourself the next day ... then you could give her a lesson in your expertise and shame her into not doing something that stupid again

As with everyone else, I agree that cardinals are meant to be in groups.

No offense, but I don't think your babysitter could care less whether or not you get a cardinal; she was probably merely making small talk with you to pass the time.

Sure she can get one if she want to. But tell her it wont live very long as it is a schooling fish and likes its own species for safety and company.

Cardinals are schooling fish & the best way is to add some more with the one that your babysitter bought.
