I think it was 99p, but I'm not sure. It is colourless/see-through, with small head, and a very long (5-6" thin body, no visible fins. Essentially it looks like a big sperm. Thanks! |

Practical Fishkeeping magazine covered it in their Interesting Imports section way back in December 2003. This fish is known as the Glass Eel, Pisodonphis boro. It is a native of the Mekong River in Laos, and reaches - wait for it - a metre in length when fully grown. Food consists of such things as crabs, lobsters, and any fish that it can fit into its mouth. This link should give you more information (isn't PK wonderful for doing this? )As it says in the article, the fish is euryhaline (i.e., can migrate from freshwater through brackish to fully marine environments, and back again). You'll need a large aquarium for long term maintenance, and you'll probably have to dedicate a species aquarium to it, as it may prove to be all too ready to eat any other tankmates you try keeping it with, with the possible exception of big Pangasius Catfishes, but if you want to set up a Mekong biotope complete with the correct fishes, you'll be looking at a colossal aquarium, because the Mekong River's native Catfishes grow to be huge - Pangasius reach 3 feet with ease, the Helicopter Catfish, Wallago attu, will hit seven feet, and of course there is the daddy of them all, Pangasianodon gigas, a monster capable of reaching 10 feet. Yes, that's right, ten feet. However, if you have the resources to keep one of these Glass Eels, they make interesting oddballs. One to tempt Shini with I think! ![]() |

I wish I could have read this last week, so I would have known about them. They were in an auction, and I almost bid on them, bummer I did not know more. There is always a bigger fish... |
