Thanks for the response, How far away should the speakers be in order not to disrupt the fish?

Well, i would say out of the room.

If it isnt possible, then as far away as possible.

The sound travels far, but the glass does dampen the sound alot.

Put it this way, when i sit in front of my tank, when my big clown loach is ready to come out, if i talk in a normal voice, he gets scared, and goes and hides again.

Sound can kill or send humans insane it has been used as a form of torture for centuries.

During my teaching years to show the students the dangers of sound and the virbrations that happen with wood working machinery. I would turn on every machine in the room (with the students outside) close all the doors and windows and let them feel the virbrations on the windows.

I suffer perminent ear damage because of sound (no ear muffs when I was in the trade) so I do know what I am talking about when it comes to dangers of sound.

Your answer a big NONO if it that loud it is also doing you perminent and unrepairable damage so think what it is doing to your fish.

Think about the times you're sitting in your house and a car passes by and you can feel your walls vibrating from the bass. Just think how your fish feel and remember that most of them have very sensitive lateral lines. It must be excruciating to them.

Apart from the fact that loud noises and intense vibrations from the bass of a big speaker are intimidating to many fishes, there is a second reason to keep Hi-Fi loudpseakers away from aquaria. If an aquarium houses fishes such as Mormyrids, Eigenmannia virescens Knife Fishes or similar species that use electric fields for navigating in murky waters in the wild, then the electric and magnetic fields generated by even a modest loudpseaker can seriously stress such fishes. The same applies to other equipment such as PCs. While a PC probably won't have a measureable effect upon most other fish species, it WILL adversely stress Mormyrids etc., because the electric fields generated by a PC are considerable.

Let's face it, you can trash the contents of a floppy disc by leaving it too close to a Hi-Fi speaker, so imagine what the same electric and magnetic fields will do to a Mormyrid ...

bass is much much better then loud treble or sudden sharp noises like slamming a door
i have a 400 watt rms sub in my room n its wave length is about 54' long which can penetrate 3' of solid concrete
it does not bother my fish at all
all of my fish even my bala sharks n red bellied piranhas make no out of ordinary movements or have any changes in behaviour as bass is a long slow wave
if i turn up the treble my fish tend to hide
i shake the house with my sub quite often n my timid fish such as piranhas n balas have still perfect intense colouration n behavioural patterns
the point of electogenic fish is correct though they should not b kept near speakers especally subs n large woofers and even pcs

actually, they tested that one out on myth busters, and it was busted, so.............

what do you do if you have enough bass to vibrate your entire house though?? all the speakers are in the same room as the fish tanks???

OK SOUND is basically nothing more than VIBRATION. The higher the amplitude, the louder the sound, kinda. Sound carries farther and better in the water than it does in the air. low frequency vibrations, like that from propeller on a ship can be heard a few miles away under the water with the right equipment. best way to avoid it is to not blast the bass so stuff's fallin off the walls.
