Heterandria formosa, a betta, some shrimp although of course those aren't fish, possibly a pair of certain killie species, arguably Dario dario.

I would go with a betta, male or female, but not both. You could also, add a snail (but sometimes they can get rather large). A ramshorn would stay smallish. Some people add one african dwarf frog and not a snail, but the betta would be fine by itself. Make sure to add just a very small pinch of salt to the tank if you should go with a betta.

hmm ive never heard of salt with bettas. mine has done well for a yr and a half in a 10g tank with out a hint of salt. and just for the record salt wouldnt be a good idea with frogs and snails..neither would liek you much for it.

You are right on the frogs and snails and the salt -- I should have thought of that. I read about the salt in a book / informaton on the internet on bettas, but I don't know how many other people have used it. I have not had any problems with salt, but I only use a very tiny amount.
I guess it is a matter of personal perference and what works for you, so long as it doesn't harm the fish.

If you plant it and have it filtered, you could put a trio of Endler's livebearers in it.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Thanks for the ideas! I have one that has been sitting around empty. I put water in it last night and I'll leave it to settle while I decide what ( and if anything) to put in it. I have had Bettas before but I have a big glass vase for them. I had one in it and it died after about 3 or 4 months. It was so beautiful that I quickly bought another. It also died within months. After that, I decided never to get Bettas again.

I have kept bettas for years at a time in gallon bowls with no salt whatsoever... I suspect that constant exposure to salt would do more harm than good...

I second the endler's livebearers.

Or you could get a couple male guppies.

Or you could just have a dwarf frog without a betta...
