Ok I am starting to get some really stringy hair algae in my 40 gal. planted tank. I was getting some weird thick branching algae but most of that is pretty much gone or hasn't really done anything bad yet.

Now I just found this really thin hairy algae on my wisteria. It is only really thick in one spot some I am going to just cut that leaf off but I also have found other little tid bits growing here and there in my wiesteria. The rest of my tank seems to be looking alright.

Lighting.....
130W Coralife 6700K
Time: 12 hours a day (on a timer)
* goine to start cutting back on the light a bit (11 hours)

I am also going to start using some Flurish Exel but I have to wait for a shipment.....

I might be able to start posting pics early next week....

I've been researching the same problem. over the last 4-5 days hair algae has been starting to grow pretty rapidly. In my case it's on everything except the wisteria...not a strand of hair on any of it. I'm using Leaf Zone right now but will switch to Flourish Excel to see if that will help as shown in several posts.

I had a massive dose of the same problem here are some of the answers I received. As soon as possible I will be posting more info about the cures/remidies that can be used.

Keep well away from any algae remover as it can be very dangerous in the long term.

Hi,
Here is a site that deals with the various types of
algae, how it occurs, what it is, and especially - how
to get rid of it:
[link=http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html]http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

and another:

Hope these help...

Thanks for your replys so far.....I am going to try and steal a camera here sometime this week if I can find the time to get some pictures. Basicly it looks a lot like the top picture on this site.

keithgh,

It looks similar to the pictures that you posted but not nearly as thick. It is muchmore spread out and thinner.

Also, I read somewhere that it likes to grow in low energy water flow areas of the tank. Could I add some flow with a power head or something of the sort to cut back on it? Right now all I have is flow from my Whisper 60.

Thanks again!!
