I was just reading a post about stocking a 5 gallon tank, and Gobies were brought up. I'm thinking of redoing my 5 gallon AGA, and was wondering what I could do with these fish in such a tank. Is it really suitable for these fish? Also, were can I find some info for the basics of these fish, I have searched FP and can't even find a profile on any Gobies. I have a tropical fish book that shows some Gobies, but doesn't get too in depth about the care for them. Any and all information is appreciated. BTW here's a pic of the different types of Gobies my book has. Are these a readily available kind of fish or are they hard to come by? If so, what are some readily available Gobies I should find in my LFS?

Nick-
I can't help much with the feasibility of stocking a five gallon with gobies (though I do know that bumblebee gobies are the most popular choice), but I can point you in the right direction.

Firstly, there are a few goby profiles on the site. Just go to the profile search page, scroll down to the "Family" dropdown bar, and choose Gobiidae. Yeah, the goby section is lacking in profiles, but it's a start.

And, I can tell you that the catalina goby and the firefish are the two most common of the four shown in the picture; at least from what I've seen. They're marine though, I don't know if you want to head in that direction. I do know that a five gallon tank won't hold any of those four fish for long; most other gobies will get too large as well.
They're actually not that hard to find, for some gobies are pretty common fish. The bumblebee gobies are probably the most readily-available; and again, are the only ones I can think of that will fit in a five gallon.

Sorry for all the jumpy sentences, I'm kinda tired. Hope that gets you started.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Bear in mind that I don't know much about gobies, but I do believe that the ones in the picture you've posted are all salt water fish (I only point this out because you've posted your question in a general freshwater forum). Bumblebee gobies would probably work in a 5 gallon tank, but I believe they need brackish water.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Yep, all of those gobies are saltwater.

But you could try finding some Rhinogobius wui, which are beautiful and completely freshwater. In the year I've been working at the LFS, we've only got in two shipments of them, so they are not the most common fish in the hobby.

Ahhhh..thank you for your help, I wasn't aware they were Marine or Brackish for that matter. I'm not ready to make that leap yet. Well, i've already started a thread, so what can I put in this tank that is reasonable? I know of a Betta, but i'd like to try to go with something different that I haven't had before. Maybe a Ram or something? What do you think?

oooo those are cool looking! Can you give me a little more info on them? For instance, how big do they get? Should I get more than one for them to be happy? You know things like that. And thanks for the suggestion, that is just the kind of fish i'm looking for

They only get about 2" long, and are pretty peaceful from what I've observed, so you could probably put about three of them in your tank.

A cool setup for them would be a sand bottom, with some Texas holey/lace/bowl rock with some Anubias nana planted on it.

I like gobies

You could go brackish and have either bumblebees or knight gobies; I actually have both living together but in a larger tank.

Cory, what are those fishies common names? I think i'm stuck between Bumblebee Gobies and the Rhinogobius wui (If I can find them). It'll be fun to work with a type of fish I have never had before.

They are usually sold as "White-Cheeked Gobies", but I wouldn't be suprised if LFSs made up their own crazy names for them.

Well after a call to my LFS, I was told that White-Cheeked Gobies don't come in very often. However Bumblebee Gobies come in a little more frequently. I think i'd like to go with the Bumblebee's anyways, but I honestly don't know the first thing about setting up or keeping a brackish tank. So who's going to get me started? I get the sense it's not that difficult, and i'm a fast learner. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions BTW!
