Hello! I will be getting a 46 gallon tank, and I need some help with stocking/compatible fish. This is my stocking plan so far:
2 Dwarf Gourami
10 Neon Tetras
4 Corys: 2 Adolfo 2 Bronze
5 Dwarf Rainbows

Can I add more fish to the tank? If so, what are some good, colorful community fish I can add?

I would add 3-4 corys of each type, so there is around 5-6. You could add some more RAINBOWS MAYBE (whoops caps lock)

Yeah, I think that adding more cories would be great. They're very social little fish, and prefer being kept in groups of at least six or so. It's best if they're in groups of six per species, as they can tell the difference between each other and tend to hang out most with those that look the same.
On another note… Corydoras adolfoi??? You’re one lucky person, I would love to get my hands on some. Please post some pictures if you can!

As for other fish, maybe a few more rainbows, and then more schoolers. I personally like tetras a lot, and they do generally fare well in community tanks. Colorful and peaceful options include lemon tetras, flames, glo-lights, rosy tetras, and black neons. The list goes on and on, but these are only a few examples. If more tetras are what you’d like, just search through our profiles or pictures on the ‘Net and you’ll be able to find some that interest you.

And hey, welcome to Fish Profiles! Hopefully you can find what you need here.

thanks for the welcome!

i actually don't have any of these fish yet, and i did not realize that adolfo cories are hard to get? i just chose them because i like the way they look =p so how about i get 4 bronze cories instead, does that work?

2 Dwarf Gourami
10 Neon Tetras
10 Black Phantom Tetras
4 Bronze Corys
6 Dwarf Rainbows

can i add more colorful fish?

Do yourself and the fish a favor and add the fish very slowly. A few one week see how they do then add a few more.

Your loses will be greatly reduced. I would also check out the Neons closely. Try to find out how healthy they are in your area or by supplier. Cardinals might be a better choice but don't add them to the tank has been running for at least 6 months.

What about this :-
2 Dwarf Gourami
10 Neon Tetras
10 Black Phantom Tetras
6 Bronze Corys
4 Dwarf Rainbows

Just go for it, but you must add the fish on a period of 1/2 months, to be safe.

Yep, you should build up your stock gradually. That'll help to ensure that your tank can handle the bioload produced by all the new fish. Maybe go with one school/shoal of fish or the gourami pair every two-three weeks.

I'd add more cories than just those four. As was said above, groups of at least six are best for them. So up the bronze cory shoal, and then it looks like you can have another school of tetras. Did you like any of the ones I suggested, or did you look through profiles/Internet pictures?

Maybe go with this as a stock list:
Two dwarf gouramis
Ten neon tetras
Ten black phantom tetras
Eight smallish tetras
Seven bronze cories
Six dwarf rainbowfish

That should be fine, as most of those fish are light waste producers.

okay thank you!

i think i'll stick with your list of
Two dwarf gouramis
Ten neon tetras
Ten black phantom tetras
Eight smallish tetras
Seven bronze cories
Six dwarf rainbowfish

i actually like those lemon tetras that you suggested earlier, and i think i'll try those. but if for some reason i change my mind about the kind of tetra i want since there are so many to choose from, do all types of tetras get along with each other?

when i put the fish into the tank, what order should i put them in because i learned that some fish will be aggressive to each other, so the order of stocking is pretty critical. ALSO does it matter what genders these fish are in order to get along with each other?

I don't see too much aggresive issues with your list.
I have cardinals with two big angels and the angels don't bother them at all. I did put the cardinals in first.
I would go with one small school wait a week or two and then slowly add the others. Make sure you keep up with water changes and feed the minimum that's the key.

okay thank you. but what genders should the fish be? like is it okay to have the 2 dwarf gouramis both be male?

i recently went to the petstore, and i saw some tetras that aren't on my list that i really like. therefore i might change the tetras that i have on my list right now. but do most tetras get along well with each other, or will certain kinds of tetras not get along? what i had in mind instead of the black phantoms were maybe black skirt tetras, longfin tetras, or orange von rio tetras...

I'm not a Gourami expert but I believe two males are fine. The males will be more colorful than the females and I believe Gourmais don't usually breed in aquariums anyway.

The tetras on your list are all compatible. I have a 46 gallon tank with a large school of cardinals and rummynose tetras and they all school together.

Note: It's natural when you start a tank to want many different types of fish, but I could tell you from experience the fish are MUCH more interesting to watch when you have fewer species and more of one type. The exhibit more natural behavior. A couple of "these" and a couple of "those" will not be exciting after a while. I've had between 15 and 20 cardinals in my tank for over a year nd I'm still not bored watching them.
