The only Africans I'd put ABFs with would be pelvas or lionhead/blockhead cichlids. |

You really want to cover all the levels of your tank, you have the ABF for the top, adn the brbs for the middle, I thought a bottomfeeder would look nice. Plus cories can be mildly active. I know how you feel. Fish tanks are like art work, you want to impresss your guests with active happy fish. If your very worried, they get more barbs. - Dj :88) |

You could probably fit a school of some species of cory in there. Although small, cories live on the bottom of the tank and won't interact much with the ABF at all. - DJ :88) |

Pencils are too costly a fish to simply leave for the ABF to eat (which the will--pencils are mid to top dwelling fish). |
Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | Ok so what will be the final stocking for the 20? What about 1 ABF, 6-8 tiger barbs, and maybe a small schooling fish like what? Danios maybe? Or pencil fish? |

Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | Well how about for the time being the ABF in the 20 with a school of tiger barbs and maybe a small school of cherries? |
Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | I have a couple tanks that I would like help with stocking, they are: 20 gallon- display in my hall so I need bright fish that can not be eaten by a African Butterfly fish. I was thinking maybe 5 male guppies and 5 female guppies? 30 gallon- was hoping to breed some type of cichlid in there but not sure what kind? ANY IDEAS? |
Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | My ABF is about 3" now would it be alright with the Auratus? |

Having kept the species for several years, a trio of congo tetras, IMO, would be perfectly at home in a 20 long, or even a 20 tall. I, however, would NOT keep an ABF in a 20 (though Fih Guy's 30 will be fine), as they grow to at least 4" and need quite a bit of depth and surface area. Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | Ok how about this then? I was planning and breeding tiger barbs in my ten gallon, so what if for the 30 i have the ABF, 6-8 cories, BN, and a school of tiger barbs but how many, and if so could i fit in any other fish? And for the 20? Or could a school of tigers go in the 20 because i really want to breed Auratus in the 30. Thanks for all of the ideas, keep them coming. |

Make the 20g a breeding tank for kribs (really easy) or rams (not as easy). Then put the ABF in the 30g with bottom feeders like a BN pleco or 6-8 corys, and some larger mid-dwelling fish like a school of tiger barbs (the bigger you can buy them, the better. Just some ideas. You could maybe try a school of some larger barbs like gold or rosy. Soz, I don't really know about ABF, I was just trying to help with stocking levels and ideas. I have also seen a 2" scissortail rasby swallowed by an ABF, so small, thin fish such as harlies and other smaller rasbies are out of the question. I suggest pevlachromis sp., and perhaps congo tetras, as they are of similar origin, and should coexist quite peacefully. Otherwise, and I like this option better, erect a preadator tank with South American leaf fish and dwarf pike cichlids. Last edited by Cup_of_Lifenoodles at 02-Apr-2005 02:05 |
Fish Guy![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 ![]() | Well I like all of those but I guess I have narrowed it down to two. I would like to have all males but I would also like some free good food for my ABF aswell. So maybe 8 males and 4 females? Also I like the idea of the rasboras, maybe 8 rasboras and 5 male guppies? |

Or you could get all male or all female. You could also try: 1 butterfly fish 5 tetras 5 tetras 5 tetras Or 1 butterfly fish 15 tetras or harlequin rasboras Or 1 butterfly fish 8 tetras 8 tetras or harlequin rasboras Like any of these? ![]() ![]() As for the cichlid, i would breed rams! Or any other dwarf cichlid! Last edited by labrakitty at 02-Apr-2005 01:17 |
