Thanks Do you think they'd be happy in my tank? It's not too small for them?

Everyone, I'm sorry... I made a mistake... it's 2.5g. Sorry, I'm new to this, and being Australian I'm not that good with imperial measurements. :%)

EDIT: Callatya, I see from your profile you have Gambusia Affinis... could I put a pair of them in? I have some living wild I a small pond near my house.

The minimum tank size for honey and dwarves is ten gallons. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I've heard of sparkling and chocalate being kept in smaller tanks.

dj... I thought the smallest tank for any gourami was ten gallons? Gouramis have a much bigger mass than do bettas and are more active swimmers... and I prefer to have my betta in two gallons at a minimum.

Cherry barbs are nice, but unless you're not completely sold, chocolate gouramis are nice as well. 1 should do alright in a 2.5. And I'm glad you picked the barbs over the guppies. Much more space-smart and much better looking IMO.

Dude_dude: I said sorry (as in pardon) 'cause I didn't know if you meant a pair of cherry barbs, or a pair of gambusia affinis.

Anyway, I've decided to go with the Cherry barbs... I went to my LFS today, and spotted a tank full of them! They were all healthy and active, no floaters/dead so I'm going to pick two up tomorrow!

Thanks for your wise advice, everyone!

You can keep the gambusia, they are highly underrated IMO. they bulk up beautifully and glimmer with a real rainbow of irridescence in the right light (OK, they are just plain silver, but its NICE silver!)

There are laws about where you can keep them, but if you are in Sydney metro-ish, you are fine.

They will breed for you, but the female will probably eat the bubs before you even see them, and if you do catch them, there is the hitch that you cannot sell them and you cannot release them.

goldfishgeek -

*blush!* I'm glad you liked the article... was hoping people would get use out of it. Wish I had more small tanks I could set up.

Prue -

I think cherry barbs are an excellent choice... I'd love to try that one day.

And random thought to everyone... would a betta and cherry barbs get along, do you think? I just have a betta in a five gallon and was thinking he might like some friends...

I dont think you want to keep a pest...

This fish has been declared a noxious pest in Australia. Gambusia affinis has become established in many countries to reduce mosquito numbers.
but I think you could keep a couple (male, male or female female)

What fish would you suggest for a 2g tank? It has moderate lighting, fairly good filtration (although it has a fair bit of water movement) gravel and plastic plants. I am not fussy about the appearance of fish, I just want them to be happy in that size tank.

Any suggestions?

Male Endler's are a good idea. Small and very colorful.

Cherry barbs are quite pretty, I've never seen a picture that does them justice. They can be kept in pairs and are peaceful, sometimes almost to the point of being shy. I have two pair in an Asian community tank:

there are also endlers livebearers available here now, that could work nicely.

you could grow up a baby cray (but you would have to upgrade it later on)

Thanks everyone.

I'm looking for something other than a betta, though: even though they're one of the few fish I have a good knowledge of, from my experience they'd hate the tank as it'd be too hard for them to come up to breathe, and the turbulence would annoy them.

The cherry barbs are a possibility.... they are cute and small. Has anyone kept them? How active are they? Do they need to be in groups? I read the article about them on this site, I just wanna do some extra research.

a betta would be best, or at most two female bettas. it might be to small for a pair of guppies.

I would only put a betta boy in it...he would love the size, it sure beats the bowls...and he will be able to flair and enjoy hisself completely...though not quite as much as he would in a 125 heidi

Guppies are iffy, but if you really want them, get 2 males. A pair would produce like crazy and you wound not want that.

Kitten is writing an article on small tank stocking. It should be able to help you with some very good ideas.
